I've come to learn that there are many walks of life on this site....with more knowledge than an encyclopedia.
So, does anyone have a solution to a skunk problem.
Here's my scenerio....
I have a 3 'feral' cats that live in my garage. Actually no longer feral they are my pets at this point.....And they are welcomed guests.
I have a pair of skunks that had discovered there is cat food in there. Nightly they are digging a tunnel through the driveway under the garage door and into the garage. Concrete blockade has not stopped them, mothballs did not stop them. (the only thing that stops them is when I bring my camera and stake the situation out in an effort to get some opportune photos, typical animals :-P )
I have removed the cat food (obviously) and put it out on the porch in the morning and remove it way before dusk.
Now the skunk is coming up on the porch.
The only thing that has been suggested is Fox Urine pellets. However it has been suggested that that will also drive the cats away. Of which I don't want to occur.
Does anyone have any suggestions, or experiences with this.
I appreciate the help. Yes I have called animal control, and they have been less then helpful. And I live in a village and can't shoot the damn thing!

maybe you can find a professional trapper from this site: aaanimalcontrol.com
A trapper will probably use a live trap and relocate the skunks. Removing all sources of food will eventually discourage the skunks, but they are smart and persistent animals. Good luck! |

The only thing I can think of is to get a HAVE A HEART trap. {Ace Hardware has them.} You can use peanut butter to get them in the trap and then haul them off to a wooded area. That way you can have your cats and be rid of the skunks.
I have two skunks that come about every night so I like having them around.
P.S. one of my best cats ever was a feral that I miss so much. Good luck. |

The only real, effective alternative to the fox urine repellant is to use a live trap and relocate/destroy the captured skunks. You need to make sure that you use a trap cover, since even in the cage, a skunk can still hit its target from 10 - 15 ft. And trust me, you do not want to get a full blast from a skunk.
You may want to call in a pest control company that specializes in four legged pests. They will take care of the trapping and removal of the skunks. |

Your biggest problem would be if the skunks and the cats are not getting along. Are they coexisting in a relatively peaceful manner or are the skunks not letting the cats eat? If they're coexisting peacefully, and you can afford to do so, why not just put out enough food for the cats AND the skunks? Of course, the skunks should be fending for themselves. |

Seriously, I think skunks are as persistent as raccoons when they know there's food about. And as smart.
Try putting the cat food inside a sealed plastic container, and putting that up on a shelf or in another inaccessible area. Once the food is gone, Mr. Pepe le Pew should give up after a while.
Or you could adopt Pepe, and have him descented ;-) I've heard that skunks actually do make decent pets. They can be litter trained. A friend of my sister's had one back in the mid '60s.
On a side note, be glad you don't have porcupines... they will eat *through* the door if they want in.

I've had this same problem... we started putting the cat food on the porch, but the skunks, raccoons, and neighbors' cats still come on up. We are going to try traps... hopefully that will work. I'm glad to know that we are feeding an entire ecosystem with our expensive Iams cat food!

I mentioned this in my earlier post, but I want to emphasize the importance of having a cover on any mesh live trap when trapping skunks. You will suffer mightily and smell really awful for days if you do not. |

oh yes...do tell...
I personally have been hit (not a direct blast) but caught a spray from under a porch-through the cracks.... it was funny cuz everywhere I went I could smell the skunk..it wasn't until I got in my car to leave and I could smell it in my car that I realized it was ME!!!
It was time for new NIKE's and new jeans!!!
Your turn Spazmo
