so back in may a friend of a friend of mine asked me if i would shoot some photos of this local band called The Born Again Floozies. i said "sure," not knowing really what it was all about.
we did the shoot in a friend's art studio that is in this old church and is completely filled with crap. the band was awesome and really fun and they had great ideas about the photos that they wanted.
so, we did the shot and i gave them the files (they were for the liner of their upcoming CD) and that was that. i didn't really know when the CD was coming out or anything.
then the other day i was going into my little local coffee shop and there was an 11x17 poster of my shot with the band logo on it announcing the CD release party. my heart skipped a little beat and then i got my latte and forgot about it.
until last week when i was flipping through magazines at the bookstore and saw the shot in Paste magazine Paste is a relatively new pop culturey thing that i don't think has a lot of readership. but it's nationwide and pretty cool and i have liked it in the past.
but, ba-boom, there on page 34 (right next to the free sampler cd) is an ad for the new album with the shot! woooohoooooooo! i've gone national!
so i was all excited and i wanted a copy of the disc (which they had promised me, but you know musicians) so i went to the record store with a friend who designed the album cover and we each bought a copy and ripped it open. the shot is inside the CD cover but it's also a bonus 11x17 poster inside the jewel case (which i didn't know). we were standing at the counter looking at everything and my friend told the guy why were so interested in the photo and the cover and he goes "oh, cool, i see that every day" and pointed to this huge like 24x48 version of the shot in a framed poster across the shop. i was totally over the moon.
who freakin' knew?
anyway, here's the shot they loved so much:
you might recognize the knocked up one from my DPC Cinema entry:
we took all of those shots the same day. :)

So my question is this. How much did you charge them for the shoot and the files that they are using everywhere? Hopefully you have been paid well enough for all the use.

very cool. i know a few of the guys associated w/ the magazine and they're a good bunch of people.
if you like music, subscribe to paste, for sure. the free cd alone is worth the price of a subscription.
again... congratulations on the exposure!

the initial shoot didn't pay very much moolah, but it's more than made up for it in exposure. this is a direction i really want to move, so i need to take whatever opportunities arise. |

excellent perspective. the nickle-and-dime-gotta-get-paid-for-everything-in-big-bucks attitude doesn't really pay the bills ;-)
congrats! |

i would agree. even if something goes really big like it appears this may be heading the exposure is worth more than maybe not gettign the shoot in the first place because you were demanding mroe than they could afford. then when you get established you get paid well.
congrats on the publicity. |
