I just got Canon 10-22. and I am trying to decide if I am going to keep it or not. I have only a few more days to decide about it - if I want to return it, or one more week for exchange to other one. So far I like that the lens is so wide. Any tips, or techniques how to objectively assess the lens I got?

Who cares about objectivity when you get great shots like these?

that lens is damned near L quality in my opinion in terms of sharpness, and it's exceedingly fun to play with. which "other one" are you considering? |

What would you be considering switching it for?
It's the best of the best for wide angle in APS-C and holds its own against the best of the best for wide angle in FF. |

The 10-22 is not something I use a lot, but I think it's a neat little thing.
I could use it for the upcoming "wind" challenge, I know exactly the photo I would take with it, if I can find the right location and have a windy day. |

My friend is advising me to get Sigma 10-20, $400 cheaper (Canadian) - I tried it but:
1. the zoom ring turns opposite direction then in my Canon zooms (am I finicky? :)
2. it has external zoom - I am paranoiac about additional way dust getting inside.
3. it is heavier
4. it has "cold" colors reproduction compared to Canon, in my opinion
5. it has more barrel distortion
positives:
1. hood included (canonĂ¢€™s hood extra $75)
2. price
3. it has a feel of solid build
4. it supposed to have less chromatic aberration
4 10 years guaranty
they look both pretty sharp especially in the center, but Canon seems to me just little bit sharper. My friend defends it saying that softer is not necessary not sharp ???
Since I paid $1100 (Canadian)I would like "scientifically" check it. I can exchange it during this coming week if I find any problems with it.
You may ask how I checked my other lenses Ă¢€“ well just by feeling. But this time I would like to be more precise with my decision, I guess I am maturing, or should I trust Canon that all its 10-22 zooms are the same.

Well, I may be an elitist Canon snob of the highest order...Hell, there's no may be about it, I am, but I'm absolutely certain that Sigma doesn't match up. Cheaper most often really does mean cheaper. That little Canon baby you've got is easily the best glass on the market at that range for your camera. One of the main reasons why it was so difficult for me moving to the 5D wasn't the cost, it was having to give up that glass. The only downside in my opinion is that if you decide to move to full frame in the future, you're going to need to leave that 10-22 behind.
But this is just from my perspective. Certainly you really need to take into consideration how often that lens will be in use. If you shoot lots of landscapes and are serious about getting the highest possible quality, than you have no choice here. Otherwise, if such subject matter is merely a side interest, than perhaps the Sigma is the way to go.
ETA - Looks like you already have the 17-40, which should already be acting as your primary landscape glass. Hmm, that complicates the situation. Well, I'd still go with the Canon, but no doubt that price difference is attractive.

www.photozone.de does not support the idea that the sigma is a better lens, particularly in the area of Chromatic Aberration.
