Last Sunday my computer crashed along with all my images (and husband's business records, but I could reconstruct those.) Anyway, I took the computer to a data recovery company and they returned an external drive with "all" of my images on it ($2,300 later). I shoot RAW which, for Nikons, is NEF. I bought a new computer and installed Photoshop 7.0 and tried to open one of the recovered files. Photoshop says "Could not open because it is not the right kind of document." Does anyone know if I need to install a patch or update for Photoshop to read a NEF file? I can't remember now if I had to do that or not 4 years ago when I started shooting RAW. Or do you think it's because it's a recovered file? Would the recovery process change the file structure? Please...any words of hope would be very appreciated. Thank you!

I'm not sure, but I thought you needed to add Adobe Camera RAW to ps7 for it to read the files.

What happened to all the .psd and .jpg files?

Check the CD's that came with the camera. There should be a PS plugin for NEF's on it.

There are several updates for version 7 available on the Adobe Downloads page.

Note: This page is for the Windows versions. There's another for the Mac versions.

Maybe something there will help. Good luck!

PS7 doesn't have RAW capabilities without upgrades/plug-ins. So once you get that situated, you should be fine!

I see you have the D200. You need to go to the Adobe download section and get the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW. Whichever version might be with PS7 will not be able to read the D200 NEF file. I have CS2, and when I needed to reinstall it after a crash the version of ACR that it shipped with wasn't even new enough to read the D200 NEFs and I got the same error message as you.

I open all my NEFs with Nikon View 6 and then export them to PhotoShop as TIFFs.
