Amanda, with that picture it was pretty easy. Just used the wand and selected the sky. The whole sky got selected at once. Then you copy the sunset you want, and paste into that selection. Adjust it, try to match the colors/levels/saturation, etc - and done ;)

Thanks, now I just have to find a good sunset pic where the sun is not directly in it so the lighting angle could at least match up somewhat...

Edit to add: I also played around with using paths to make layer masks and feathering the selection and then blending the layer.... so now hopefully Dave has a good cloud/sunset pic

yes! awesome, how'd you do that? (I really need to do a better job getting out the sensor spots....)

Tone mapping. I have posted the rough workflow in the photog notes on the image.

My quick try at it.

Thank you Robert, but I don't have that program... : ) Is there a way to blend a gradient mapping layer into another layer to get something close?

Ok, what are your steps, I think this is REALLY close to what I'm looking for.... If you used a gradient in the sky, how did you get it so well blended with the tree in the right side?

Also, I think I am going to clone in a bush to get rid of that aweful building on the right side anyway....

But I love the colors of your edit

If all else fails, there's
always the Icelandic edit: ;)

I used NIK Color effects promo, it is available free at the Nik website. After using the Nik filter I adjusted levels and shadows in photoshop then sharpened. The Nik filters have a blend mode that helps a lot. Hope this helps.

Ok, so here are the final edits

THANK YOU everyone! I never would have thought of editing these this way without your help.

I'm pretty pleased with the results... I know the fake bushes look sorta weird in some spots... But for $25, I only want to put in so much effort, I think she'll be really happy and probably won't notice that... (well, maybe notice that there are now bushes where there weren't any, but I don't think she'll notice the fakeness of it -- that takes a trained DPC eye, hahaha)

Wish me luck, and give yourselves a pat on the back for being so awesome! : )

what was your workflow with this image, if i may ask? :)

Here's my contribution:

Almost but not quite complete desaturation, then color balanced to get the faded sepia look (the key is to slide highlights and midtones off into reds and yellows, but slide shadows off into blue). Two grunge layers with textures from Mayang's Free Texture Library, one is water droplets, the other is crumpled paper. I erased the grunge layers over the barn, then used dodge highlights and burn shadows on the barn and grass. Some color matching, levels, and other tweaks to the layers. Small bit of USM.

I should add that I personally love giving this treatment to old structures like barns, to make it look like you found it in an old forgotten crate in the hay loft. But I see you've settled on your final edits ;-)
