*you want a real scare? ask your kids what all these household items have in common. if you're lucky, they won't know the answer...
these are just some of the household items that kids "huff" (inhale) to get high. it not only can lead to brain damage, it can kill them. for more information, check out inhalant.org
this is an increasingly alarming problem here in central virginia. this image was shot to illustrate an article dealing with this topic. i shot all the items on a raised piece of glass with a white backdrop and two lights below the glass. in post-processing, i took out the background and replaced it with a gradient map. |

I'm not sure how prevelant that is up here in the Northcountry of New Hampshire, but we had our first death by the "Choking Game" last spring. *sigh* Kids think they are invincible. It's really sad when they learn they aren't in such a permanent way.
BTW. Nice shot. |

What's wrong with plain old drugs? Marijuana has got to be a lot safer, even crack or LSD probably are (except for the addiction thing)
I mean, inhaling things that are made to clean stuff and not be inhaled or even come into contact with your skin is pretty retarded... |

LSD isn't addictive iirc.
Yeah inhaling things is terrible for you. |

Yeah, the compressed air that you can buy to clean off computer keyboards, and small electronics is being inhaled by kids too. It's not just air. I try to talk to mine about everything, but stuff coming to my attention helps me keep it in the forefront of subjects to bring up again.
Thanks, Skip.

I had a close friend who died in 1985 from inhaling freon. It was the summer before our senior year in high school. It's amazing what kids will do these days to get a rush. |

Honestly, I don't see how that game is entertaining. Watching it is like watching golf on TV, or paint dry on a wall - borrrring.
But then I don't like beer and won't drink it, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I was at a hardware store in Milwaukee one day, There was a young guy at the counter getting really agro because they would not sell him a can of spray paint. I later asked the clerk what that was all about. She said he was a paint huffer, He tries to buy it all the time but they always refuse to sell it to him for his own well being. I later seen the guy out on the sidewalk when I left the store, Sure enough you could see gold paint all around his nose mouth and eyes, He also was holding an empty paper bag which was probably what he was going to use to spray the paint into.. I think it is a problem everywhere. But perhaps just not as big in some areas. Kids listen to other kids and alot of the influence comes from being told not to do it by adults.
There are so many things adults do and then turn around and tell kids it is bad. Drinking, Smoking and Sex to name a few. Ofcourse the kids are going to think, Hey they haven't stopped doing it. It must be good. Unfortunately They take this attitude towards all things bad including things like Huffin paint or choking games.
Edit to add,, I am not implying Sex is Bad, Sex is good!!! I love Sex. just needed to make that clear.

Seems kids can find a multitude of new ways to damage themselves nowadays. This story about mothball sniffing gave me a shock when I saw it. Mothballs? For real? |

Beer pong is hilarious! I also only say this because I'm really good at it.
But anyway. I remember in elementary school, maybe 2nrd or 3rd grade, there was this girl who liked to strangle herself until she turned blue. We freaked out and told the teacher a few times, who I don't recall making a big fuss about it.
I also recall inhaling white-out being the thing in maybe 5th or 6th grade. I think I've tried several times to get high off white out at that time and it never seemed to make a difference to me, so I gave up.
I dunno, so much of the allure to these things is the fact that they are dangerous and taboo. I never knew about huffing until they taught us about it in DARE, and I know a lot of kids tried it right after learning about it. It makes me wonder about these things sometimes.

Kids are bored. If we just let them ride thier motorbikes around the neighberhood again, and quit making sports so you have to play them in an organized leauge rather than just for fun after school, then maybe they wouldn't sit in the basement choking themselves. |

Not crack/cocaine -- it can put you into ventricular fibrillation (essentially stops your heart/circulation) at any dose, in addition to being a leading precipitant of hemorrhagic strokes. |

hsteg is exactly right. When I was in H.S. one of the parents would always throw a keg party after homecoming or prom or the last day of school and in order to get a keg cup you had to turn in your keys. I don't ever remember kids sniffing things to catch a buzz. |

LOL! Here here!
My Mom (God bless her) is one of those "keep the peace at any cost" parents that would be locked up for life in this day & age. From the time I was about 13, she would buy the beer, wine, etc. for my parties as long as she knew we would be staying at my house or certain friends' house. She caught me & some friends smoking pot outside the house and told us to get in the backyard before someone catches us.
I never "huffed" but I knew several kids in high school that died from sniffing white out. I did something similar to the choking game once or twice - just hyperventilating til you pass out. Wait-- I did "huff" the Nitrous Oxide out of whip cream cans occasionally. A friend and I sat in a parking lot one night and sucked the nitrous out of a case and a half of whip cream and laughed uncontrollably, non-stop for 4 hours. Best ab workout ever! ...yeah it was around the time of the paraquot scare so there weren't many alternatives.
All that said, this is a very different age we live in with kids doing much more dangerous things. I do tend to agree with the idea that things like DARE will scare some kids, but tempt many others. |

I've also heard of certain parents in victoria with plenty of cash who rented a boat for their grad party. Pished off the cops plenty because there was alcohol and minors, but not one of them drove home drunk because the cruise was an all-nighter.
Another school did the bus thing to a campground.
Pretty sad that we have to work so hard to keep kids from jumping out of the gene pool. |
