I would love to know, when and why, you choose a "FAVORITE"..... Please add yours to the list.....

1 - I often know the first time I see an image, that is must be a favorite.....

2 - I also add a favorite, if it is a shot, or image, that won't go out of my mind.....

3 - I also add a favorite if it is something that I really like, re the "WOW" factor, re composition, processing, emotive and also very differant, something new, and something I haven't seen before.....

4 - I also try and always add a favorite image of the person, after I have just added to my favorite, so as to have a true picture of that member.....

5 - I add a favorite, because I really like that person, and that image just so much.....

I never hesitate to add "favorites" and look at "my favorites" often.....

1 - Because it's a great picture that I love

2 - The picture "tells" me something

3 - The inspiration of the moment

1 - "WOW!"

2 - "I'd like to try something like this in the future. I'd better favorite it, so I don't lose track of it."

That's my most common reason

Some very different reasons showing up here I wasn't aware of.

When I joined, I was told that when I filled up my favorites card, I would get to go on a photoshoot with Dr. Jones. I think a conspiracy is in place though, cuz' last time I got close, the admins went and upped the allowed limit.

;)

For a general favorite, the photo has to move me in some way or make me think or just be pleasant to my eye. However, if there is a style I like, as in a photographers style, I tend to select a lot of that person's photos when I view the portfolio. Two people come to mind that fit into this category.

Every photo I have selected as a favorite has had some sort of impact/effect on me one way or another. Be it admiration of the photographer's accomplishment in execution of the photo or an emotional trigger of some sort.

Come to think of it, I don't have enough favorites selected.

This quote of yours at the end, re is what I have been waiting for reguarding adding "favorites"..... re Alienyst

"Come to think of it, I don't have enough favorites selected."

I feel the same way, and now never hesitate to add "favorites" whenever necessary.....
I actually love doing it, and enjoy looking at my favorites many many times.....

My only suggestion would be to see our favorites in individual folders, like challenge winners/ribbons, landscapes, people etc.....

I add to favorites mostly images that had a big initial impact - like I felt something powerful (and usually positive). My fav's is full of funny child pics - kids - especially toddlers - are unpredictable and always entertaining. Obviously they appeal to me on my own emotional level. ;-)

Other reasons to add to fav's:
- As mentioned- reference for future attempt at trying some technique or something.
- Sheer Hilarity
- Images that poke fun at me or help perpetuate my virtual persona (i.e. Village Burner references, etc.)
- Pity (just kidding)

Reasons NOT to add to my favorites when I am inclined to want to:
- I am reluctant to add SPs or nudes of women because I don't think my wife would be comfortable with it and I respect that.

Anyone else have reasons NOT to add to fav's when they want to?

edit to ammend...I just checked and I guess I broke my rule about what not to add on a couple occasions. Oh well, always exceptions to the rule. ...until I get a frying pan upside my head, I guess I can continue to add some occasionally. :)

There are so many beautiful photographs here that I can't favorite them all, so I've limited myself to photos that stun me, that are like nothing I've ever seen before, the photos I've always wanted to take but was too blind to know it, the photos that I would never ever have taken in a million years because they are from a totally different planet, a different universe.

Oh - you just asked if anyone had a reason :P

I won't add any of Joey's pics cuz' he has too many and will forget us little people.
Oh and Librodo, and scalvert, and ursula, and goodman, and and and

and I'm just kidding of course.

Yup. I add favorites for a simple reason: I know I'm going to want to see that shot over and over again and I'm too lazy to go searching every time. I'll often NOT favorite such a photo when it's from a photographer that I really admire (Dax, Librodo, Ursula, Kiwiness, etc.) because it would clog up my faves and I'd rather just see their whole portfolio anyway.

When it comes to favorites, I rarely choose them during challenges. I find that I tend to choose images that show a cultural aspect. I seem to like people alot, so many of my favorites are people. I guess that I feel some sort of connection when I choose a favorite. Not so much that I want to try it myself, but I look at the favorites I have chosen many times, because they just give me warm fuzzies, or I am just awed by the power of the image.
I find I tend to stay away from landscapes. I must like live things in my favorites. Pups, bugs, people, kids, cats, critters. I seem to want life when I choose a favorite.

I tend to use my favourites to keep track of the photos I give tens to in challenges - to get a ten it has to fufill most of the criteria that you've all mentioned already. I can't imagine voting 10 on a photo but it not being worthy of making my favourites list. And that way Im taking the personallities out of the equation. I don't know who the photographer is while I'm voting and then I find out when the results come out - its quite exciting!

I suppose the idea of a dpc favorites gallery may symbolize a dialogue of respect and appreciation between me and other viewers. I am fairly lazy about my favorites galleries, the task is always daunting because I really believe that to be credible, a favorites gallery might only contain at most under 50 to 100 images on a site like this. (zeuszen has an admirable, carefully chosen, articulate, beautifully edited gallery, small in size)
Mine is not a ribbon showcase to wow, stylistic, psychological, philosophical or academic - although the format can lend itself to those characteristics, and also - tribute.
My general approach & aim has been mundane and it is a easy way out. I often, choose my "favorite photographs" because that particular person picked one of mine. I don't recommend it, extremely eclectic, a haphazard feel that mirrors some variety of the site, but for me this creates built in limitations as to how many favs can be added. I am sure I have neglected some I should add. The foto may represent what I think might be good work or something that is interesting to me. It may not represent best or exceptional to other viewers.
My "favorite photographers" nor other worthy individuals don't always get a slot, thus many are certianly not included.

I love that line, and it's SO true! I find myself doing and thinking the same thing. Most of my fav's are either a personal WOW or a "dang, I need to try that". :D

That's also done automatically for you by the DPC site. Go to your favorites page, then select Manage your favorites, then View your statistically favorite photographs - all of your 10's will be listed there. :)

An image that strikes me as a favourite is one that moves me when I look at it, that's all I use.

Generally I wait until a user's check clears the bank, and then I'll add their favorites.
