DPC is a great place to learn about photography,
I stumbled upon it surfing the net 3 years ago.
I had a p&s camera and knew nothing about re-sizing,
Photoshop, or photography. Still don̢۪t know much
about the technical side.

I received a pm. from nova he commented on my
stats so I had to check them out.

(My total average is low 5.77)

My average for 2004 (10 highest scores) was 6.03

My average for 2005 (10 highest scores) was 6.81

My average for 2006 (10 highest scores) is 7.34

(the stats for the lowest scores would be more interesting!)

(I know its not all about stats! arty photos score lower, its
about playing this game.)

The growth I̢۪ve had is due to DPC and the endless
patience of some of my friends, met here,

Pedro, bradp and Xion. (wanted to acknowledge that).

It̢۪s not intended to be a brag thread, I have a long way
to go, just wanted to encourage any newbies.

thanks to joey lawrencefor teaching me how to shoot
on manual and for telling me how many clicks i had left. :p

I've been around for as long as you and during the time you were inspiring.

Thanks.

hmm... I wonder if you were really as much a newbie as you claim... if you really did reach this level in only 3 years, I am definitely inspired.

I'm in awe, Ms Goodman, truly in awe.

There are so many from back in those days that would prove the point. ;)

I'm just playin'. Even in her auspicious beginning at DP, Les had the eye for it (she's a spectacular artist - check her profile, seriously). She just didn't have the technical ability to get her ideas from brain to camera to computer. Clearly she can do that now and in my case, the student has long surpassed the teacher.

Her success would be far more irritating if she weren't also a gem of a human being :P

You're the goods, Les.

Thank you for the inspiration. I just skimmed through your portfolio, starting from the earliest challenges, and your growth has been AMAZING! Perhaps this means there IS hope for meeeeeeeeeeee? :)
Thank you for sharing your talent with us.

I've gotta say Goodman I've only been aroud a shot while, but you are definatly one of the reasons I stick it out. I've had a couple of comments from you and they're always useful, informative, and encouraging... now if everyone could be like that :)

Can't wait till I'm at the level you're at with your photo's, you really do have a great eye, and artistic sence.

Thanks for making DPC a great place.

Oh I'm crushed! ;)

Went down memory lane in your portfolio out of curiosity and I am amazed at your journey. You certainly are an inspiration.

Now come teach me.
I just checked mine out of curiosity, and I'm going backwards!

Hey there Lesley :) Now most of us would kill for an average of 5.7+ so I wouldn't exactly call it low! but relatively speaking, folks with a mantle full of ribbons such as yourself often hold a 6+ average. It was noticing that tidbit that prompted me to look a bit closer at your early dpc entries, and like everyone else, I am blown away by your tremendous progress! Like I said in the pm, how could I NOT fav you? You have truly inspired me to continue to strive to do better. And I can't wait to see the images you'll be entering in the challenges to come!

Oh, and although I know it isn't bragging, I think you have certainly earned the right. Thanks for all you bring to dpc.

No one here will deny the quality of your images and you were one of my first favourites after I joined. But nearly as important as your beautiful images are the high quality comments you leave.

I would like to compare some of your early comments to some of your recent ones and see if they have improved at the same rate as your pics:)

Thanks Lesley for being inspirational AND constructive.

Thanks Lesely for your encouragment. As a newbie here on DPC, I appreciate being able to see your progress, an inspiration! :o)

~ Tina B. ... currently participating in my first challenge, averaging 4.8 so far (YIKES!)

Hey Lesley... you joined less than a month before me, and what a remarkable improvement you've shown! I just checked the stats and was shocked at my luck early on-

2004 = 7.04
2005 = 7.17
2006 = 7.30

I'm sure the more realistic overall averages wouldn't be as pretty, but it does show that I'm improving. That's really all that matters for anyone. It's interesting to see where others have come from. Heida and Librodo both started out very good and went up from there. Kiwiness started out near-perfect, so there was little room for improvement. Elsapo is the biggest success story I know of... from lousy to good to unstoppable in less than three years. Now that's inspirational!

Avg of my 10 best of 2006 = 6.465

This was certainly a surprise. I guess there's hope for me yet, although 3 stinkers in a row (including Morning) doesn't help!

Seeing the progress of Goodman and others is inspiring.

Being a newbie myself too, I can't tell how many things I've learned in my short tenure here at DPC.
You are truly an inspiration and encouragement to me.
(BTW, I just signed on for my DPC membership early this morning...)

Yep, I'm making great progress myself, Leslie.

Average of 10 best 2003.... 4.15
Average of 10 best 2004.... 4.21
Average of 10 best 2005.... 4.56
Average of 10 best 2006.... 4.98

Albeit a bit slower than your progress :)
Thanks for the inspiration.

Well Lesley, since you're South African, I'd already scrutinised your profile and stats, and your steady improvement here has always been a source of encouragement.

In fact, I've quietly made my goal to win a ribbon in as many challenges as it took you to... So that gives me another 30 challenges to work on before ribboning (you took 41 to get your first, and now you ribbon so often that you were in the top 5 for last year - very impressive).

You have always been one of the most inspiring artists to me. Keep it up :)

Thank you SO much for this thread.

I just LOVE the thought that with time, effort and the amazing direction and support from the incredibly generous people from this place, that I too have the potential to reach goals in photography that I've previously only thought would come if I enrolled in a full time photography course (which I had intended to do once my children were all in school!)

The most refreshing and amazing thing about this site is the way that everyone here WANTS you to succeed!

In my life (off the net) I live in a VERY positive collaborative community - and it's really what feeds my spirit. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd find a photographic community with the same willingness to pull me UP!

I am ever SO GRATEFUL for the generousity of the experienced members of this site.

Thank you for showing me your growth - it is TRULY inspirational.

Lesley, I think you were the first photographer on dpc whose work consistently turned my heart to mush and made me awestruck -- and still does. You may just be my favorite of all my favorites -- I just love your style!

I can't stand to even look back at some of the crap I started off entering here. I'd love for those early pictures to just "go away" :) So I agree 100% about how this site promotes growth and improvement as a photographer.

Edited because I totally type faster than my brain thinks :(
