I personally dont want to see fotogs outtakes before voting is over, regardless of how close it is to the one they submitted or not. I find the race to be the one to start the thread annoying & really can leave undue impressions on voters.
My 2 cents. :)

The problem is 'What is an Outtake?'. Also, asking how something would do in a challenge that is still in the voting stage to me is bad practice.
However, if someone has an entry in voting and posts another image for comments without reference to the challenge I don't see a problem as long as the image doesn't make it easy to identify an image entered.
What is an outtake for a free study? Everything? |

OMG. This debate is all over the map. I'll throw in my two cents. I agree with Brad and some others in principle about rules stifling interaction, learning and fun in exchange for preventing some perceived voting influence on challenges with no real prizes. And people get jumped on for not understanding arbitrary rules (which aren't really rules anyway).
My position: Discuss outtakes anytime you want in a hideable forum. Even forums or topics that aren't hidden are easy enough to ignore. Like many others I got soured on the conversations in the scores threads more than outtakes, but instead of thinking we need a new rule, I just chose not to go into the scores threads unless I feel like it - problem solved. There are lots of things that will influence some voters, but to the extent it affects the outcomes in any meaningful way seems far-fetched and even if true, what is at stake fer crying out loud?? I consider the free-form discussions (albeit diminishing with each new rule), learning and fun in the forums the most valuable aspect of this site - even some of the rants, outtakes, scores threads which might irk me when I do look - have more value IMO than this voter influence or offending challenge entrants by taking attention away from the challenges - the challenges are really a distraction from the forums. ;-) (a joke)
Well that's all I have to say.
...except that I was going to say something else instead. Please let me know what you think of these outtakes:
1.
2. I agree with GeneralE and theSaj, but not bear or Brad
3. We need more rules regarding people taking the last cup of coffee and not making a new pot - now that's rude!
Carry on. |

Well, the rule does work. There are not very many outtakes during the challenges anymore. However, once the challenge is over there is very little interest in outtakes, and I miss the discussions. There seems to be more team talk and general discussions lately and less sharing of photos. I personally liked it when any photo not entered in a challenge could be discussed at any time.
Is there any evidence of a difference in voting patters since this rule has been in effect?
Edit to add: I have not read this thread, just wanted to give my opinion.

Bump....please is there any indication when the poll will be taken down. I answered the poll in the first hour...that was back on the 17th....do I really need to keep looking at it on my front page.

I don't mind. The more it pushes my crappy bokeh score down the page the better.

Ah, so you just want to see anything BUT your Bokeh score there. In other words, if it ain't Bokeh, don't fix it! |

One last chance. Here is my re-emphisis of my post on page one. IMHO:
I have been asking to add some words to "Clarify" that not only outtakes be excluded.
Also include in verbage to exclude pictures that "Did not make the deadline" I think there was some controversy that if nothing was submitted, how could there be outakes.
I do agree that there shouldn't be any discussion of photos untill the voting is over.
In a similar fashion, Media commercials for politicians have been used and abused on TV, and have been known to influence voting to a great extent. Thanks. |
