That's nothing. In the days of BBS there was some REALY cool art. It's hard to explain but it was way better than that.

haven't done any in a long while, but used to create a lot of ascii art. If I had a 5" floppy drive somewhere that can read them. I got discs of the stuff.

There is a ton of it on the web. Google it or try this place, download the files, and you can create it as well.

I ran a BBS from 1988 till 2000. There were some neat things you could do with ANSI graphics. Back in the 70's we use to send pictures like the one above over our teletype gear. We'd create them using the tape machine so we could repeat it without having to type it all in again. We had all kinds of pictures that were passed around the world via teletype. Lots of fun and some people were really creative.

there are ascii art animated gif porn movies. They were very strange. Just about everything at the time was turned into ascii art for one reason or another. Mostly just because it could be done.

Nothing like seeing the final product printed out on a 13.5 inch daisy wheel printer, especially when you changed the wheel and the small aspects of the picture changed.

We were too poor to have a computer and made our ASCII art with Legos.
Word processing was a bit tough though. ;)

Are you saying those ASCII images were created one character at a time? I always thought it was just software putting it together. If so ... wowsa.

Originally yes, later there was software that would help you create it.

This is one where I can join in too.

With the Apple 2+ and a Light Pen, I could (and did) address the monitor one pixel at a time. Get crosseyed? Of course. Get pictures, sure. Unfortunately, (or perhaps fortunately) none of them survive.

Funny thing. Before the computer was able to handle graphics this was a creative way to render images.

Render and transmit -- the first fax machine was demonstrated in 1843.

Of course, and before the computer this art was manually done on typewriters. lol
