Just went to an awards ceremony for dad. I sat in the back with a Canon 75-300mm 4-5.6 IS USM. The photographer assigned to shoot the recipients was using a 28-105mm or 135mm f3.5-5.0(?). Why wouldn't he be using something like 2.8 or lower for auditoriums?
I am looking for a lens to do band shots at music clubs/auditoriums.
Would Canon EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM be a good lens or should I go for a 2.8 or lower? Or is what I have good enough?
Here were my lens options:
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Tamron SP AF 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5 Aspherical IF for Canon

| The EF 28-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM is a nice generalist lens, in my experience. But under low changing light situations in, say, a club, it would not work as well as you might hope. If you have the money to buy a EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM I would think that would be better... |

I've actually gotten some great low light shots with just a 50mm 1.8 with no zoom, you need to make sure you're not too far away, but it'll be the best one to use of the list IMHO
bring the tamron too in case you end up being that close.

| I would think an 85mm 1.8 would be great for situations like that. I've shot some indoor events with my 70-210, and even at 2.8 sometimes you want a little more shutter speed. |

Depending on where you get to stand, I have used a 50mm 1.8 which is the sharpest lens in the bag and great wide open. I have also used my 70-200mm 2.8 Sigma, but with a monopod (which 'looks' cool - everyone thinks you're important). I also use an 18-200 VRII but find that the depth of field isn't as nice. The 85mm 1.8 sounds great...also how about a Sigma 105mm 2.8, I have used that lens in this kind of setting before and it's super sharp and also doubles as one of the best macro lenses around (it is in fact a macro lens)...cheap too...
