I've never posted in the Rant section, but I'm really getting ticked off.

It started a few years ago with the credit card companies. I would get mailings from MY OWN credit card company, offering 0% interest and no yearly fee. Well, I was paying 15% and $25. So I call them to get mine changed. "Sorry, that's for new customers only". Well, the credit card was easy. You cancel that one, and just take one of the other offers that comes in the mail.

Yesterday, Best Buy had an ad offering two Motorola Razr phones for $49.99 from Cingular. I've been with Cingular for five years. My daughter and I need new phones. "Sorry, for you sir, they are $189.99 each. This offer is for new customers only." We're under contract for another 11 months. But after that, "bye, bye Cingular".

Comcast is offering digital cable TV, high speed internet and their new digital voice phone service for a year for $99/month (after a year it goes to $132/month). It's all over TV, and we get offers in the mail. We currently have Comcast standard cable TV (for almost 15 years) and the high speed internet (for 5 years) and pay $105/month. (Oh, and they just raised the bill $2 month so we can now watch Washington Nationals baseball games. Great, I'm not a Nationals fan and the baseball season is now over.) We call them up tonight to take advantage of the offer, because then we can cancel our other phone service and save $50/month. Sound like a good deal. "We're sorry. That's for new customers only." I think I need to work out a deal with Verizon for DSL and a dish.

Why is that when you are a loyal, long term customer, all of these companies want to screw you over?

THey've already screwed you, now they are looking for others to screw.

Agree 100%

It's even worst here. The Phone Cie "Telebec" (they belong to Bell Canada) bought the local Cable Provider and the local Internet Provider.... they now have a monopole and we are paying at least 80% more then what you can get in Montreal.

Dealing with those kinds of companies isn't that hard. You basically have to know how they operate and what to say to them. Also, it's not always WHAT you say as much as it is HOW you say it. If you SOUND confident in what your saying, you'll get more results. There's always another company out there that is MORE than happy to have your business.

1. Tell your credit card company, at the very least, to lower your interest rate or you'll go to another company. If your credit is good, try AMEX (0% for 15 months, 4.99% fixed for transfer of baance).

2. Call Cingular and claim your phones lost. Or, like you said, switch companies....if your in a big city, they'll all be the same and they all off the RAZR for a discount.

3. Open a new Comcast account in someone else in the home's name or get DISH and DSL broadband (a BIT slower, but not by much).

Added: (Meant to hit preview, not post) With 3 phone calls I lowered my car insurance $350/year. Piece of cake.

We used to be with comcast and saw that they had a deal going. We called them up and they gave us the same line of crap.... so, my hubby said thanks and hung up. He did some research and called them back. He said, "Hi, I just called a little bit ago and asked about your special. I was told it was for new customers only and that there was no offer for customers already signed up. We have been with you for X amount of years, now and we have always loved your service... but I looked into Verizon and they are willing to give me this, this and this for 1/2 of what I am paying now. How do I go about canceling my internet service with you?" Well... when he got off the phone, we went from paying $50 a month to paying $22 a month for 6 months. After that, we switched to Verizon.

I actually really like Verizon. We have had them for a few years and their highest speed DSL is just as fast as our cable was. The thing I really like about them, is that we have our house phone, our cell phones, our internet, AND our direct tv all on one bill. And since we have all of that through them, we get a discounted rate. It's nice. For the cells, home phone, net and Direct TV, we pay like $200 a month! Not too shabby! And like I said, it's all on one bill. So, that is 3 less bills we have to write out every month! :)
