I have read the user's manual cover to cover and cannot find any info on the "program mode" What is it? How do I Use it? Is there info on it available online somewhere? Thanks in advance.Shari

The program and auto modes are synonymous, Shari. The green camera symbol on your mode dial indicates auto mode. You've used this mode, BTW, when you shot the macros in your portfolio.

What I do find remarkable is the fact that I managed to post my reply 'prior' to your question. Hm...

Do you mean Program AE (the P on the dial with the little camera icon)?

From DPReview.com:

Program Auto Exposure

Automatic exposure mode, camera meters the scene and selects best combination of aperture and shutter speed (and ISO if set to Auto) to properly expose the image. Additionally you can compensate the exposure by either +/-2.0EV in 0.3 EV steps. The F717's program AE mode is not flexible (ability to select equal exposures by rolling the command dial).

To clarify, it's more flexible than the automatic exposure (green camera on the dial) as in Program AE mode you can adjust EV values with the jog-dial. A good mode for snapshots, whereas the automatic exposure setting is really just designed for getting someone else to take some snapshots of you without them totally screwing up.
