For those of you who sell your photos, how do you determine an appropriate price? Do you use a percent over cost ratio or some other method? Any insigh is greatly appreciated.Shari

I basically figured out what my fave photogs had for prices and went lower than that. I'm like the KMart of DPCP! lol (still haven't sold one though as far as I know!)

I haven't sold anything through DPCPrints, but I've sold about a dozen prints first hand. I'm trying to figure out how to price the prints overall and was hoping for insight from folks who regularly sell their prints either here or elsewhere.

The problem isn't that there are hundreds of buyers and yours are priced too high -- it's that we need to get more traffic on the site. I can assure you that I spend a lot of time doing everything I can to try to get the site 'out there', but we honestly just your help doing it.

There are about 125 artists currently selling work on the site (and about 7,000 more who aren't but could perhaps help out). If each of you did one thing, pulled one string, or just made some effort to get more traffic on the site, that would be a serious boost in customers. Ask yourself if there is anything you can do to help promote the site. What favor can you cash in? Who do you know? Where can you get us linked? Can you get someone to write an article about the site? Or feature us in any other medium? Help us help you. I know that sounds really lame, but there's only so much we can do. That said, the site is still very young, and I still have the highest hopes and expectations for it.

I am 100% open for any suggestions, and I'm 200% open for any actions you take on your own. Anyone have any thoughts?

Drew

Well, for starters, I found this site through Brian Briggs at BBspot.com (it was a "favorite link of the week").

Why don't your send him a note and say that his listing helped make your site so successful, it has spawned this new project, and if he likes it can he give you another plug.

I think I got hooked on this site from BBSpot to. Don´t quite remember, but I have seen a lot of interesting stuff from that site.
I´ll put a link on //www.tilveran.is that will create around 1000 visits.

I've started putting links on my pbase images through to their corresponding prints on dpchallenge. Dunno if it helps, but it can't hurt.

Have you thought of (or are you) using a search engine submission service such as CoffeeCup's SubmitFire?

Drew,

You will be happy to know I just sent out a link for DPChallenge and DPCPrints to over 200 people who get a newsletter from me twice a week along with a brief discription about DPChallenge and DPCPrints, I know from other experieces with this group of people I can expect at least 20 of them to check out the site, and most of those 20 people will pass the link along to someone they know who has a digital camera.

I'm currently developing my site, but the link is already there, and it was on my ezboard signature and my ezboard itself. If our profiles could be linked easier, it would be so much easier to throw on a business card or something, ya know? //mavrik.dpchallenge.com or //www.dpchallenge.com/mavrik - so much easier than profile numbers and php=blahblah, etc...

When my site gets done, I will bet you see some instant traffic. ;)

GeneralE: Actually, last time you suggested that, I did e-mail him. About a week later, I got an e-mail back saying, "Thanks for the link." Doesn't sound really promising -- especially since it hasn't been featured yet.

finnur: Great. Anything like that is a great start.

pinback: Search engine submit services are the devil. Really, never use one. About 4-5 years ago, when I knew no better, I used one of those services. Over the next 2 days, I received over 2,000 junk e-mails, and my inbox never really looked the same afterwards. We're on Yahoo and Google, and that's all that really matters in the search engine world.

OneSweetSin: This is also great. If everyone could even just tell their friends in their address book, that would be a great start.

That feature is actually in development -- expect it today or tomorrow. In fact, this is a good time to reward everyone who's reading this thread and tell you that these new urls will be part of a referral program. i.e. The more customers you bring in, the more money you make. Details soon, but please continue to rack your brains for any ways you can help.

Blatant commercialism, I call it (<-- walks off in disgust) :-)

Top work Drew - should get us going.

I don't know how much good it has done but I have already heard back from 8 different people who checked out both DPChallenge and DPChallenge Prints.

This is not meant to be offensive, but I posted this thread hoping for some practical advice on pricing prints, not to discuss promotion (of either my own prints or DCPCrints). I would still appreciate comments on the original topic.Shari

Sorry -- I'll take full credit for hijacking this thread. Please continue your discussions on the topic of promoting DPCPrints HERE.

Okay my 2¢
It's pretty much an individual decision.
We all value our own work in our own mind. Also there is "what the market will bear" or the degree of difficulty.
I did all of the above, looked at others prices and then realized the PRINTS site is new and I want to get my foot in the door.
In fact I have sold four......three I bought as gifts.
I have now removed more then half of mine and plan to remove more. I think the trouble is not my price, it's my subjects.
Hope this helps you.
