Anyone try this before? And would you recommend it to normal pc user with out programing knowledge?

For those who don't know, Lite step is a 'program' that replaces the standard Window interface, where you can customize it to your hearts content- i think. ;)

I just had a bit of a look..... you can obviously do some pretty funky stuff with it.... I would say it would be wise to tread carefully, theere is a note there to suggest that you read the faqs and bulletin boards to aviod some of the pitfalls.... I might download it and check it out when I have time.

For being a graphics program, you would think they could make their site readable! lol.

I used it for a couple of years before switching to Linux. I liked it a hell of a lot more than the boring Windows shell.
You don't need any programming experience at all to use it, but unless they got round to making a GUI configurator you will need to edit a bunch of text files to tweak it to your preferred style.
Give it a go. The only system change it makes is to one registry key, so that windows loads litestep intead of exploder as the shell.
Here's another useful site for ya: //www.desktopian.org/

PS. Anyone still under the illusion that Windows is a safe & secure, well programmed solution type the following into notepad:

Save it as a .html file, then double click the sucker :p

If you're using win2000 I wouldn't recommend it. Lock ups constantly.

Is there any site with a simpler guide? I would like to give it a try. Which do you recommend since I see that there are some similar type of program out there (Blackbox?).
And the description on the features are rather intimidating!

I joined litestep.org but was unable to locate a download for the shell? or are they referred to as profiles or themes?

Also, does it work under WinXP Pro ?

Sorry for the late response on this but I had to wait till I got home to root through my old bookmarks.

This page on shellfront.org has a nice list of tutorials.
You will also see a section in the contents on the left headed 'LS Distros'. I suggest you start with one of those as they are fully packaged setups to get you up & running quickly.

A couple more links:

Blackbox is actually a Linux window manager that the Litestep guys are using as inspiration (Litestep itself was originally based on a Linux window manager called Afterstep). Aside from giving you links there isn't much I can do to help - I've been a Linux head for well over 18 months now.
