I got a 4GB iPod Nano for my wife a while ago. She let me use it for a while last night and now I'm rather jealous and want to get one too.
She's worked up a pretty good library of music in iTunes on her PC from our CD collection, plus stuff she's bought on iTunes.
My questions are these:
If I get a Nano for myself, and I set it up to use iTunes on her PC, can we both have the same song(s) on both our Nanos at the same time? Does it work differently with purchased songs versus songs from our CD collection?
Would I be better off setting up my Nano with a separate iTunes on my laptop, where I don't really have much space to spare?
Thanks for any advice/comments.
:-)

Definitely better off using a single pc. That way, any purchased music can be shared. iTunes will recognize the two as separate entities and will keep track of them. You can build separate music lists so each controls what ends up on your respective nano.
My family has four being served off a single pc. It works fine. |

I think you can have up to 5 iPods per itunes thing. The best bet, in my opinion, is to just use a 3rd party iPod program. That way, you can sync as many ipods as you want, whenever you want and don't have to deal with any of iTunes stupid little "security" functions.

get a real mp3 player, then just copy any mp3 or play list over you want. I recommend the zen zision by creative, has a 4 inch video scree 30gig hd and a cf card reader. While it wont display raw it will still back it up. will also play avi, dvix, mpg, mp3, fm radio, record voice or fm radio and has about a 12hr battery life on audio. And you can connect it to a TV to watch said movies on your tv or do a pic slide show (jpgs only) wonderful device I use mine on trips to back up photos and listen to music ect. try that with ipod |

I don't know about the stuff bought on iTunes, but the things taken off of CDs should be able to be on both iPods no problem.

You can have as many iPods with the same songs as you want. You can auto-sync or not on a per iPod basis. We have 4 iPods in our family and we use the same music library for all of them.
The 5 computer rule is for purchased music form the iTunes Music Store. Even then, you can have purchased music on all the iPods you own.
As for the "real MP3 players" comment - just look at the numerous failed attempts of iPod wannabes!

To clarify scarbrd's comment. The files that iTunes sells are digitally encrypted to prevent piracy. What does this mean? The files are meant to recognize each and every hard drive it exists on. It will not allow you to transfer the file to more than 5 HDs over its lifespan. this obviously prevents piracy by not allowing a working file to be copied to thousands of HDs.
Regarding the IPODs, I have two and have the same purchased songs on both at the same time. You should be fine.

Can someone please tell me how to load a second ipod onto the pc.I have copied the itunes library onto a second user account for my daughter but pc doesnt recognise this ipod. It was many minths ago we managed to get my husbands on after realising we had to do something through Windows, but what was it!!
Thanks, it's really frustrating trawling through endless websites for advice. There must be an easy way but we are not that au fait with this stuff. |
