Hi,

I'm trying to combine couple of photos together to "make a face" to some fruit using photoshop cs2.
I'm very well familiar with layers, masks, blending options... everything that seems relevant. But I can't get it to look right.

What I'm trying to do is something like this photo by smellyfish1002 .
Been tyring to PM him, but I didn't get any answer yet and the matter is kinda urgent - for some school project.

Anyway, if anyone could give me a tip or two on the right way to do that, I will be grateful!

Thanks in advanced,
Gal

I've never done this so it's just a guess... But try putting the face in a layer on top of your fruit and set the face layer's blend mode to Luminosity. Then put a layer mask on it and mask out any details that aren't important to the image.

this sounds about right. if that isn't working the way you wnat try different layer modes.

Thank you.

I did try all blending modes last night, and didn't get anywhere close. But somehow when I tried it again today - luminosity did look a bit closer to what I want.
Still, I feel like am missing something. Something in my photo just don't look as real as smellyfish1002 's Mr Potato head.

I will dedinately keep trying. Thanks!

2 further things to try:
- lower the opacity (ok, I think you already tried this)
- try the "blending options" in the "layer style" dialog (double click the layer, then adjust the sliders in the "blend if" dialog) - they are often used to blend two pics together

good luck :)

there's a tutorial on this subject at www.bertmonroy.com

also in the blending options you can move the little sliders (and pull them in half also) to "blend" certain colors/luminosity more or less than the others. Worth a shot.

I'm sorry, I can't show what I did already because I don't have anywhere to upload the photo at the moment :-(

msdoubletrouble - thanks! I will try to look for that tutorial, although from a very brief look at the sight, I don't see any written stuff. Mainly photos and some links to buy books at Amazon.

And as for the other ideas - thanks a lot. I am trying them all. Still I am not happy with my results. I feel they are mnissing that 3d amazing feel that Mr Potato head has. Like the face is actually part of the potato. While in my case... I can't help it but feel that the face is just another layer above the fruit.

Again - thanks a lot for your ideas! Even those I have trird before, still turned out very helpful combined together!

This site
explains the use of displacement maps.

About the only way I know of to get a realistic effect.

WOW thanks!!! Im gonna do some reading alright!!

Although... not sure if it's going to be legal for my school project, but I'm sure with some reading and understanding, I might be able to find what's wrong with my photo!
