Glad I am not the only one who is NUTS about mine! I took some photos of a huge spider yesterday but decided that I could not consider that my pet so I stuck to my crazy cat.

Here is Day 5:

And here is Day 6:
Everyone knows that it's easier to get your dishes clean if you do a little pre-wash before you run them through the dishwasher:
Mike |
I was asked how I did the "Pre-Wash" shot, so I thought I'd answer in here.
The idea came a long time ago because when ever we load up our dish washer, a number of the dogs would come up to help with the dishes and we'd have to shoo them away. I knew there was a picture there but I never could figure out the best way to get it. I finally came up with the idea of putting my camera inside the dishwasher and firing it remotely with my Pocket Wizards. The problem was I only had a set, a receiver and transmitter and I needed to set my lights off as well. So I bought one of the new Plus II Transceives that Pocket Wizard came out with and I could now remotely fire my camera and it would also fire my lights.
The trick now was setting my camera up inside. What I did was make a wooden bracket that just fit across the back of the dishwasher on the tracks that the dish tray rolls on. I had to put two out riggers on the end to keep the camera rolling forward from the weight of the lens. SO it looks like a square E without the middle leg. I then mounted my tripod ball head in the middle of the cross piece. By using my ball head, I was able to angle the camera easily. With the Pocket wizard mounted in the hot shoe on my 1DMKII and my 17-40 4.0L lens on the camera, the whole thing was pretty big and I had to work a bit to get it into the back of the dishwasher, but it fit. I also had to take out the water upspout thing from the bottom tray so it wasn't in the way and the water spout from the upper tray so it wasn't hanging down in the way. I then smeared some dog food on a few plates (these are actually clean dishes) asked for some volunteers (I had no lack of volunteers LOL!). I had another shot with 4 dogs there that would have been much better, but I was blocking the light that is off to the left and it didn't turn out that well. You have to understand, I couldn't chimp the shots to see how they were looking and I was under a lot of pressure to get this done before my wife came downstairs and caught me. Sometimes she doesn't see the humor in some of my ideas. LOL! It wasn't until I got the images into my computer that I saw how it had turned out. I plan on redoing this, but I'm going to remove the silverware tray (yes, that knife is one of many utinsels of ours that the handle was used by puppies to cut teeth on) and lower the light more. And I'll use more of the volunteers as well.
Oh, and the dishwasher was run again with these dishes after I put the dishwasher back together. :D
I also have an idea for the fridge. But we won't go there just yet. ;)

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Mike. Now I appreciate the shot even more! That's funny about the teething knives. Sort of gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "cutting teeth". Hope they never get ahold of the sharp end! |
