Blue Ribbon, Wasn't this the same type of processing that a red was disqualified for in a recent challenge?

You mean, multiple layers from one RAW file? That'd be a no, not in advanced rules. There was an HDR from multiple exposures DQ'd not too long ago.

As Leroy says: in Advanced Editing you can sandwich differently processed versions of the same image. It doesn't even have to be from RAW; sometimes I will create a differently processed layer of an entire image in PS and blend it in with low opacity, often in "soft light" mode, to get snap in the shadows of a flatter image.

What's not allowed, so far, is the taking of several differently exposed originals and combining them into a single composite, even if you use a tripod and they are identical other than their exposures. So "true" HDRI imaging is not currently legal in DPC challenges. What you can do by creating varying versions of a single RAW exposure works pretty well up to a point, but there are limits to how extreme the dynamic range of the original scene can be if you want good shadow and highlight definition both from a single exposure. The RAW tweaking can only take you so far.

I am pretty sure that the combining of raw exposures is legal. But I'd wonder how long the debate on the volleyball net he cloned out will be for major elements. Its a beautifully done shot though for sure.

Dollars to donuts the volleyball net was just a little tiny flaw way in the BG and won't be a problem. I'd be amazed if Doc didn't have that base covered. If there were any doubt in his mind he'd have run it by SC first I'm sure :-)

I love Doc's image. I tried it myself when I was out at Cannon Beach on the 30th, but I did not get as good of results.

Unfortunately, I am concerned for him and the dates he shows. Why would the uploaded date be before he shot the image? Could this be grounds for a DQ or did the date get wierd because he replaced his original submission with this better image he shot later in the month?

Also he says "This was the last shot of the evening (the same one as my purple entry). " He date for the FS is the 22 September but his Purple is 23 September...I am not referring to uploaded dates.

Doc...please tell us this is okay...it's too beautiful an image to DQ.

This has happened to me also. I have loaded up an image on, say, the 10th, then shot a better one on the 13th, say, and replaced the original with that, and it still shows the 10th as the uploading date. He had something else entered, and replaced it with this one.

It wouldn't matter; as long as the FS shot shows EXIF anytime in the month of September, it doesn't matter what date he entered into the database. If I shot on the 7th for a challenge ending on the 8th, and mistakenly entered the 6th as the date of shooting, it still wouldn't DQ me.

Yes, I did replace another shot with this one. Here's the outtake:

Sometimes I forget to update the date shot, although these were all taken on the same day so I wonder if I didn't just hit the button wrong. I'll be sure to fix it.

Here's the original with the RAW conversion for the sand:

I got nothing to hide. :)

I donno about that; we can form a posse and try to hunt you down and recover the stolen volleyball net from wherever you hid it...

I haven't put in the photographers details yet but the third place was also processed twice from the one RAW file.

Far out! So at least 1, 3, and 4 were HDR-processed images! We have a movement underway here!
