Fairly recently, I had the opportunity of borrowing a 1Ds2 and several L's. I thought I'd let everyone see the amazing resolution (of both the camera and the lens) with these photos and their 100% crops. Shot with 180 f/3.5L wide open. The sharpness, contrast, color-balance, bokeh, saturation, and any other characteristics you can think of are absolutely stunning. The uncropped images had just a touch of levels, USM, and saturation; crops are unedited.

I realize that I didn't quite focus on the nearest eye of the little blue and green insect. The DOF is 2mm at most. Enjoy and feel free to post your own super-detailed crops.
Happy Shooting,

The 180mm F/3.5L is easily my favorite lens in my bag, albeit also the least versatile. But pretty much awesome for two things: macros and portraits. Incredible sharpness and pleasing bokeh.
A 100mm F/2.8 might be more versatile in focal length, but I would never trade the 180mm for it. Not in a million years. |

Very very shallow DOF on those shots. Beautiful blue bug. |

This is very tiny - it's part of a small cactus plant. Scroll down into the comments section and you'll see a picture of the cactus to give you a sense of scale. Taken with the Canon 100/2.8 with a reversed 50/1.8.
This little flower is smaller than fingernail on my pinky. Taken with the Canon 100/2.8 and and a 12mm extension tube.
I like this macro because it is UN-cropped. It was submitted for the Straight From the Camera challenge - so no post processing whatsoever. It's not the best version of this image (it's been done a million times before me), but it was my first shot at it. Also taken with the Canon 100/2.8.
