My rebel just broke AGAIN!!! I just spent $250 getting the shutter replaced, and now I'm getting an error 99 and have to send it to Canon to find out what's wrong? ARG. Any experience with this error message and what might possibly be the problem?

I'm so tempted to just run out and buy a new one. Holy credit card debt, but photography is an obsession!

any advice?

First things first. Have you tried taking off the lens and re-seating it a couple of times? This error could well be due to dirty contacts.

Remove and re-install the battery

yep, many times. :(

I also removed the battery and cf card for over an hour and then put them back in (the lady on the phone from Canon suggested that.)

Still getting the same message.

I've gotten these several times before with my Rebel and my XT. The advice below usally works.

Make sure you take the battery out and leave it out a minute or so.

Try removing and reattaching the lens

Try another lens.

Yes, especially if you've just lashed out a whole bundle of cash on a repair. Give 'em hell.

Yeah, but Canon wasn't the one that fixed it. We took it to a well known local shop that does on site repairs. Perhaps I should bring it back to THEM. I've been snapping shots here and i hear something funny going on when it takes the picture. Maybe they screwed up when they fixed it. MANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN this sucks.

Thanks so much for all your help guys. :)

yeah, go yell at the local shop first!

thats because error99 is canon cath-all error, its what happens when the camera knows theres a problem, but doesnt know what it is, or doesnt have a specific error number to tell you

I'm literally about to go to Target and buy the new 8megapixel rebel. It's $799 and if I apply for a target credit card, i get 10% off.

I don't want to go weeks without my camera if I have to send it to Canon. :(

to buy......or not to buy...........

ARG.

The local camera shop isn't open for me to yell at them. ;(

I would say don't do that. I work in Customer service and well we hate people like you. Our job (and canons CS) is to try to help, It is not the fault of the person on the phone and yelling at them just serves to make their day worse, bring them down to the bad day level your at while they are wanting to help make your bad day not so bad. Yes they may not be able to get the prob fixed in the time frame you want but thats usually not their fault, and if you think it is taking a long time think about this, you pitching a fit and trying to get things rushed will only serve to delay others waiting in line. If you get put ahead of people already waiting..well all around its rude and mean.
