How do I shoot with the mirror locked up? I would really love to get a shot of the moon tonight. What would be the best way to do it?? |

You can't shoot with the mirror locked up. But you can use bulb mode.

well that killed that idea. Bulb mode....start with a black sheet, expose, cover again, then close the shutter? |

Set the camera to manual. Set exposure to "bulb" press the shutter release once to open and again to close. That way you can set the length of exposure to what ever you want. |

Out of curiosity, why would you need a long exposure to shoot the moon? Typically you'd want a pretty quick exposure to get details of the moon. |

The D70s does have mirror lock up but for some strange reason (maybe to entice you to buy a higher end model?) it is only for CCD cleaning and the shutter cannot be released in that mode.
Not to hijack but does anyone know if VR lenses would help to mitigate mirror slap vibrations or do those vibrations entirely lie in the body itself?

I don't want to have a long exposure, I am trying to get rid of that tiny shake, when the mirror moves. |

You really only need to worry about the slap on shutter speeds from around 1/30s to about 1/2s.
Any full moon shots would most likely be greater than 1/30.
