I hope it'll be a picture worth oogling, heh

I'm not sure how much it matters what the subject is. It could be a boring or exciting picture, what matters is what we do to it. For example, we could all probably do something decent with a sunset that's great out of camera. But to take something bland and make into something special is where the fun's at. Not that I think I have the skills to do that, I just want the learning experience.

However, cheese is another matter.

When I picked my sample, I picked a photo that would present a challenge to the mods. Remember, it's just for practice to improve your skills.

Since it's not your image, you can't really do anything with it once your done, unless you have permission from the photographer.

So cheese or whatever, it doesn't matter.

Darn. Missed this thread.
Maybe next time.

We do have 15 now. I'll post the final list when I get home from work tonight (probably an hour from right now). I'll most likely hold off on posting the photo until Friday afternoon/evening so people have the weekend to edit. Voting will most likely begin Sunday evening.

Here are the 15 participants for this round:

yanko
smartypants
dr_timbo
nshapiro
mad_brewer
cryingdragon
snowflakejen
TrynityRose
smurfguy
deapee
boomtap
Bear_Music
margiemu
timfythetoo
crayon

I have to work again tonight so I won't be getting the picture out until Friday evening. I will email the picture to everyone (it's about a 2.3 meg jpg file) and will simultaneously post it to a web site where anyone who wants to play along at home can access it. If you are not a participant, but choose to play along at home, please don't post or discuss your edits to the photo until voting is complete on the actual contest here.

Sorry to the many who wanted in this round but couldn't make it. Keep in mind, if you win this round, YOU are running the next round (with plenty of help from me and Neil if you need it).

Looks like I'll only have Friday evening to edit this photo since I will probably be too busy on Saturday. How early Friday evening do you think you will post it?

As soon as I get home from work, most likely around the same time as my previous message: 5:00 local time, 6:00 pm server time.

It's not a rule, but I'd like to ask those in this round to yield to others who want to play in the next round. In other words, continuing participants, other than the admin and former admin, get lowest priority in the next pick.

So if you didn't get to particpate this time, stay tuned and you will get in the next round.

Sunday evening (closing time) means what time (server time?)

Crayon, the rules state the editing period is to be 2 days long. If I post the file at 5:00 pm server time on Friday, that would mean 5:00 pm Sunday is the deadline. If Neil has no objection, maybe we can extend it until the rollover on Sunday night (midnight server time).

No objection--in fact, I thought the rules state it ends at midnight anyway (no matter when you send them out.)

The challenge has begun, the shot is in the hands of the participants. For those who want to play along at home, and just edit for fun, you can get the image here. Make sure you select the "original" image size from the bottom of the image page. It's a 2.3 megabyte jpg file.

Remember, if you are playing along for fun, please do not post your image anywhere until the voting period is over.

Just to be clear...we can do anything we want to this...no editing rules apply, correct?

Check rule #2 in the first message of this thread. This is an advanced editing challenge.

Is there going to be a 'voting' process, or is this just for fun? If voting, what if the top three finishers get to continue on, and the others give way to other "contenders"? Or am I being too competitive? Ü

See rules 5, 6, and 7 in the first post.

Oh, yeah, I did read that. Sorry, I'm tired. But I still stand by the suggestion that the first three finishers continue to the next round, if we're asking people to step down and let others participate.

How do you want the 'editing steps' submitted? Just notes of what we did, or details about things like values we adjusted to? In a word doc, or some other format, or is there a place in the website to enter them? Sorry for the ignorance - I've never done this before. Plus, I'm really tired, and nothing much ever makes sense to me when I'm tired....

I've been thinking along different lines for enhancing the contest. But I've been trying to figure out ways to enhance the learning experience.

How about (optionally, of course) the top three finishers make themselves "available" by email to help the next group? That way, the best (or those who pass the test, to rhyme like Mohammed Ali), are the ones teaching.

Or alternately, we could run one round as a paired competition. Again, the focus on pairing is to get people paired together who can learn from each other.

Since you'll be emailing your edited image to me (rule 4), it would probably be easiest to just write the steps up in the email. Or you could attach a word or text doc also. Whatever works.

:p Maybe I should refrain from asking questions until I've got a few more of my brain cells actually functioning...

Neil will be making an addition to the rules for next round: Rule #1; read the rules.

:-)

If your brain is anything like mine after this week at work, take the night off, be nice to yourself, and sleep until 10 tomorrow morning.

I just want to make sure you have me as part of the participants because I didn't get any email from you. I just now noticed this post.
