If anyone remembers, I hurt my knee playing soccer five days before I had surgery for compartment syndrome. (3.5 months ago) I just had the MRI and I completely tore my ACL.

I am trying to decide if I want the surgery or not. I definitely want to play soccer again.

Looking for people with experience on the subject!

Haven't had an ACL recon myself but I work in the orthopaedic field and am happy to give you my 2 cents worth. If you play soccer at a high level you'll certainly want the surgery. The ACL is involved in providing the knee's stability, which is really tested by the twisting and turning involved in soccer. If you're only a social player the choice is not so clear. Here in Australia most surgeons would probably recommend the surgery, however I have spoken to European surgeons who have ruptured their own ACLs and continue to snow ski without having had repairs done. I won't comment on any effect your history of compartment syndrome might have as I don't know the details of it. Go speak to more than one orthopod and get a few opinions. The one thing I would say is that if you're going to have the repair done, the current literature suggests you're probably better off having hamstrings harvested for the recon, rather than the patella tendon. Hope this is of some help.

I tore mine completely about 4 years ago playing volleyball. They gave me the same advice. I still needed surgery, just not invasive surgery. They did the kind where they use the 3 holes (I know the name, just not the spelling but I'm sure you know what I mean). I made my decision based on healing time, which was 2 weeks versus 6 months. Now, I wish I had chosen the other way. My knee gives out on occasion just walking and I would never trust it to play sports again.

Are you thinking of arthroscopic surgey? I had my left knee scoped for a torn meniscus. But, I don't think they can do reconstructive that way. Which is why your knee still gives out.

DOnt' have the Military do it. My friend tore his MCL and ACL while in the Navy. He had to be medically discharged and to this day (10years later) he still has major problems with it. If you can hold out till you're CONUS then have a good ortho doc do it.

I worry about the hamstring option because of the 10% loss in strength. I have also read that the patella option is the 'gold standard.' However, the pateller tendon seems like it would be much more painful!!!

My issue is I cannot really go speak with several orthos. The Naval Hospital has two! We are on Guam.....i think there is only 1 MRI machine on the whole island....LOL We are talking one machine for 170,000 people.

Thanks for your reply :)

Thanks for your reply. I will make sure I am confident in the doctor if/when I have it done. It would be the same doctor doing it that did my surgery for compartment syndrome in June.

Thanks to everyone for their replies!
