ok thanks a bunch guys and gals you are a treasure trove of info,
i would also like to add that i have no lenses for a canon system, but i do have three leneses for the minolta mount. i don't know much about these lenses either, other then they are 'ok' and not bad or good.
lens 1 ProsSpec MC 28-200mm, 3.5~5.6
lens 2 Tamron 80-210mm, 3.8~4
lens 3 Maxxum 35-70mm , came with maxxum not sure of F numbers.
do you think these lenses will work well with the Sony? if so then should i keep with the KM-Sony mount and buy the Sony instead of starting from scratch with the Canon system? |

I know nothing about those lenses specifically, but how old are they? LOL
The last is a kit lens, nothing great these days i'm sure as kit lenses these days are only mediocre.
the first one - prospec? never heard of them, so they're probably a house brand for somebody the way Ritz has their own house brand (quantarray). 10:1 or so superzooms are not all that good - lots of compromises.
the middle one...i have a tamron 70-210 2.8 and it's older, so how old is the 3.8-4?
If you have ideas of going pro, then get canon/nikon as there are more lens types out there and the pro glass is more reasonably priced and more used stuff out there.
if it's a hobby thing, then get teh new alpha (great specs and features on it) and see what the glass you have does in the real world. The first and second ones may have a use, the 35-80 is good for ebay.

Agreed, those lenses look like they are mediocre at best and are probably easily surpassed by current mediocre lenses. They are probably also quite old and won't have any of the current optimizations for digital (such as anti-reflective coating on the back element which wasn't necessary for film)
If you want to go Sony, try the kit lens plus a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.7 if you can find one and for telephoto, check the Sigma 70-300 DG APO Macro... it's about $230 and does a really nice job. Might be hard to find, might not.
If you don't think it's worth it to go Sony (probably isn't) but you still wanted Anti-Shake, you could also try the Pentax K100D with similar results. I like a lot of Pentax's lens lineup. They've got some really exceptional lenses for cheap... or cheaper than Sony anyhow.
You might have to be in a bigger city to really take advantage of their second hand lenses, but no big deal. Their 50mm f/1.4 is a bit over 200 bucks USD.
Otherwise, Prof's advice to go with the big names is also good. Nikon has answered VERY strongly to Canon's lineup. That D80 looks Yummay.
but so does the 400XTi.

DPC is a great site for info and help and once in a while to get a photo you took up high on the big chart. |

| Sounds good man, you'll be happy with that. If you want a bit more range, check out the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 or the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 for walkaround. |
