My wife and I are going to Hawaii in November and was wondering what issues (if any) the heightened airport security has caused in traveling with camera and equipment. If I end up having to 'check' my equipment I need to know so that I can buy the appropriate cases. I was thinking about getting a Pelican 1560 or similar anyway. Thanks.

you should be OK to carry on your camera gear. It will count as a carry on bag. |

I typically handle everything (including my laptop) as a carry on in a LowePro backpack. Never had a problem (flying from NYC). My backpack a couple of weeks ago was well over the carry on weight limit too, but nobody questioned it. |

I flew recently, (when all the liquids and gels were forbidden), and had no problems with the backpack full of stuff. The TSA person asked me if I'm a professional photographer :-)
Obviously they haven't seen my DPC profile... |

I've flew to Hawaii earlier this year, and the only issues TSA had with my camera is that they tested it for bomb residue, and I had to clean my lenses when I got to the hotel. I pack my tripod with my checked baggage, but the rest of my gear I take as my carry-on.

I just flew to O'hare and back. Carried my laptop and my camera (with just one lens) in my laptop backpack. No problems. I put a second bag inside the bag though in case they felt my laptop backpack briefcase was too big (I was on a business commuter jet in one case, and indeed, the bag would not fit in the overhead but it fit under the seat. They made many people gate check their carry ons but they didn't stop me. If they did, I would have put the laptop and my camera in the smaller soft-side bag and carried them on with me while gate checking the "peripherals.
I even took the SLR out and shot through the plane window on the way to O'Hare. The commuter jets seem to have pretty clean windows. You can't use it during take off or landing though.

I often have my camera bag with me, and the most they've ever done is open it to run over it with that cloth that detects explosive residue. No biggie, though any cleaning solutions should be packed in your checked luggage since there's the whole liquid ban thing.

I just got back from Virginia yesterday and flew American from DFW Int'l Airport... I carried it on in a LowePro bag with my laptop and had exactly ZERO problems getting through security. 1 camera body and 3 lenses... Unless something changes between now and your trip, you should be fine. Have a fantastic time!! |

I actually got bitched out, and I do mean bitched out, by an attendant on a flight to Italy. We were flying over the alps and the sun was setting - unbelievably beautiful - when she came over and told me it wasn't allowed. |

I wonder if that's an airline, FAA rule, or simply an abuse of power? Taking a picture out the window should not be an issue if electronic devices are allowed at that time.
