My Postcard submission is currently scoring about a 10th of a point higher than my highest score yet. I love my shot, and I'm pleased with the voting. (Note that my highest score is only about a 5.3, so you consistent 6 and 7's might not be that interested here). Looking at it now, though (and at several comments noting this), I wish I had done the border better. I think that if I had left the border off altogether, or even just used some other color, I would be a full half-point higher. Arg! I just started using borders a couple of weeks ago, too. Maybe I'll just leave them off altogether in the future...I sure wish I had on the postcard shot. |

I tend to use the same border all the time, a small white then larger black. I didn't use any for my postcard though as it seemed out of place. A border can probably hurt as much or more than it can help a photo. I'm getting dinged for my Postcard writing being too bright. I thought that it would work better that way as most postcards with writing that I've seen really stand out. Apparently that is not what the voters wanted this time! You just never know...

Borders seem to take some getting used to. The best thing to do is look at other people's borders and how they ranked. There's some photographers on this site that are really good with borders too. Looking through the galleries and at individuals profiles can help figure out what makes a border good. Check out some of the challenge winners who have borders on their pictures, and also check out people selling prints they seem to have really nice borders too usualy.
A good border can definitely help a score, but a bad border will definitely hurt it too. |

Some photos have more border than photo, that is not my taste!
