Is the Ultra II enough for the S3 or should I go for the Extreme III? I DO plan on using it for video at times.

Thanks :)

Neither, check prices on Ritek, Adata, Apacer and maybe some other brands.

They are usually cheaper and faster.

Sandisk are marketing monkeys.

Ritek is an excellent brand for quality and often has exceptional pricing.

I personally got lucky with an iPro 2GB 170x card that is nice, but Adata are also not to be ignored. I saw a 200x card a year and a quarter ago by those guys. They are usually reliable and cheap.

EDIT to add: Ritek=Ridata. I always get mixed up. Ritek is their brand name for optical disks.

THIS is the card I use- fast, reliable and cheap. 2Gb, 133x for $42. It's probably a bit faster than the SanDisk Extreme III.

EDIT- Oh, I didn't see the S3 requirement. That one uses SD cards, so I'd probably go with THIS for $33.

Our shops use Sandisk..they are faster than anybody elses card but just like all tech...you pay a lot for the performance. We use extreme III.

The Sandisk SD cards offer minimum 20 meg sec sequential while most less expensive options offer max speeds of @20 meg read and half that write speed.

For most consumers A Ridata is more than enough..if you handle hundreds if not thousands of photos all day long..those small performance bonuses equate to time saved.

BTW...Transcend is really good too for the bucks they may be the value leader in compact flash..I had a couple.

I think someone already mentioned Transcend earlier.

Im running an 8gig 80x ritek/ridata in my 30D, been a great card and was only $150. Not the fastest card but well worth the price and has a lifetime warranty.

** edit to add card size **

Thanks a bunch for all the replies! When I didn't get a response yesterday, I went with the Sandisk. I found the Extreme III for $77 after rebate.

However, I am bookmarking this thread for the next time I buy a memory card. Are the CF cards in the brands you guys mentioned just as good?

Thanks :)

Yes. I've used Transcend almost exclusively and never had a single problem in 5 years of heavy shooting. They're at least as fast as SanDisk and about half the price.

Hi Jennifer, hope Guam is treating you well!

I would stick with the Extreme SanDisk cards, especially considering your location (ocean, high humidity). You might pay $15-$20 more for a card, but they cover it for life against failure.

I just had SanDisk replace two extreme cards that I had used extensively in the Caribbean, both were dead from water damage. I just told them they'd stopped working, they didn't even ask what happened.

They replaced both of them without question within a week, shipping at their expense both ways, and sent me a thank you card for using their products.

Top notch company, top notch product.

FWIW, the Extreme series IS made more rugged than other cards, but environments harsh enough to kill a regular card would likely prove fatal to your camera as well. Many flash media cards (including Transcend and Ritek) offer lifetime warranties too, so that's not really a difference.
