here to learn
& here to share both images & knowlage

i am very impressed by others creations
alot of them in areas i'll never likely visit -
i enjoy the cosmopolitan / international aspects of DPC

learning (IMO) comes in stages & sometimes you learn by forcing yourself to think about the challenge in a nontraditional light

I am here to learn and have fun. I haven't posted a comment before, but thought this kind of question suits me.
You don't get much more "beginner" than me - but I've acquired a lot of the basics already, just by submitting. I knew when I joined that my "style" did not necessarily 'match' the style of the high-fliers & regulars here, but I still wanted to try. I'm not much of a 'post-processor' (don't know how to yet!) but I love looking at the other photos in a challenge and thinking "woah, how'd they do that?" I try to study their shot & read the set-up & post-processing info to learn more.
My pics are "snapshot-ty" & score low, that's ok with me! I just like having the theme & focus in mind each week. I sat in a bar this past weekend staring at my friends thinking "hmm... beer ad..." and they all knew it and kept moving away from me & my camera - "no evidence please" they said :-)
I giggle when I read the score threads that I've submitted to:
others write "oh no, I dropped under 6, my shot stinks this time"
& I'm more like "ooo, almost got a 4, yeah! hope I'm not last this time!" lol .
It's all relative, isn't it? All in good fun ;-) and I learn a lot.
Thanks for reading and happy shooting to you ('-')/

To copykat - what a refreshing approach!

And to graphicfunk - think we can get your post permanently embedded in the "About" or FAQ section?

The "Challenge" for me is to expand my photographic horizons. Outside of this contest I shoot probably 99% landscapes. I can't get away with that here!

I'm just a big sponge and soak up as much as I can.
I do try and wring some of it back out around these parts when I can though.

Whatever I know, sadly bound by the constraints of my lack of talent, I learnd on DPC. People like graphicfunk, BradP, goodman, Artan and many more played the biggest role. Honor to them.

I'm here for the non-alcoholic beer, and the nachos.

Llamas like nachos ;O)

I may be slow learning it, but DPC has taught me more then the $100s of dollars in books have. At point I couldn't figure out my lighting, and one dpcer helped me over the phone. I have seen photos on here that have just flat out WOWed me, pmed the owner and ask how. They have all answered. This is a great learning enviroment with a wonderful bunch of folks who are willing to share their knowledge. However, I still want 1/10 of ARTs talent :) I'd be 100x better then I am now with it :)

Discuss......

The imposition of your will is exactly one vote per challenge. I came here to learn about photography. I started at a forum that was almost exclusively camera oriented. It helped me mostly master the technical operation of my camera. Their artistic learning opportunities are limited and seem to becoming more limited with time. After a search I landed here. I figure I won't really be able to assess whether I've learned until at least a year passes. I'm one of those you mentioned with the limited portfolios and background. I have absolutely no training in art or photography. I came here to try and branch out into different types of photography, to throw away my current crutch: MACRO. I vote on, and critique images on at least six Internet forums. I'm reading about the process of "seeing" in books by Patterson, Peterson, and Tharp. I'll probably acquire several more books on the subject in coming months.
So, when I vote and critique I'm mindful that I'm not the best qualified person for the job. But ya got to start somewhere...... and this is the place! After reading your profile, you might want to skip voting on the beer/soft drink challenge. :)

i came here to learn, i have found it a learning site, but more because i have an incentive and the people let me know when i've done a crap photo then i go away and try and do a better photo, and this is somthing i'm going to post in the site improvements (spelling?) post when i've worked it out in my head, the site should as a learning site be pushing us to improve, so if there was a facility to re-do photos with the advice posted then post it as a version 2.0?

I agree. Two wonderful responses!!!

I'm getting less and less upset with a low score on what I thought was a good picture, and just trying to have fun.

I've now bought a book on Photoshop, and am actually on the verge of trying some new ideas. And DPC is the direct cause!!

Always makes me happy when I can recycle. :)

I am here to satisfy a psychological need to live vicariously through the characters I create with a blend of photography and digital chicanery.

I have been pretty good with digital editing for many years, but was limited to snapshot photography. Since joining the site, I have spent thousands of dollars in equipment and have learned an incredible amount. Now, when I shoot pictures I don't know what I am doing much less of the time. And that translates to less time editing. I love to make a crazy thought come to life as quickly as I can, lest another thought come and make me lose interest.

The drama that unfolds on this site is also a never-ending source of entertainment. :)

I gotta say that I have a HUGE respect and appreciation for those that share their knowledge on this site. I am very lax in contributing in that regard and partly because then it feels like work and partly because of what I mentioned above - I am a speed-editing junkie - if I don't get my idea completed uninterrupted, I lose focus and interest. It takes a LOT of time and effort to post tips and procedures in a way that is helpful to most people and that's why people like BradP, DrAchoo, Bear_Music and so many others add tremendous value to this site. ...and should be on the payroll. ;-)

I'll put in a plug for the Self-Portrait challenges also - those are high-pressure, accelerated learning events that can stretch your creativity, processing skills, and every aspect of technical photography skills. Any other forum challenge events like that are excellent learning tools as well without the ridiculous pressure of voting score updating.

bla bla bla - I just went on and on. :/

A year ago I could not have done this edit without the education I have received on this site:
Feel free to edit this portrait.

Edit to add:
(Now I just need an eductaion on how to spel, or find a keybord that can spel rite)

I found dpc when I was trying to figure out how to edit a photo of an old dog for a friend. I just couldn't do it. I asked for help and was blown away by the kindness, the generosity of people with their advice.....the help I got. I knew nothing about editing ......they showed me how it could look, then even better, showed me how I could do it!

LOL ....discovered when I opened the next shot it wasn't that simple.....ps was pretty scarey!!! But, it was a beginning of a lifetime of learning. Yeah, I came here to learn.....and I'm still learning every day!

I came here with a brand new 300D and no idea how to get it off the Full Auto mode. Since then, I've learned more than I'd get from a university degree - shooting, lighting, processing, printing, you name it. And any time I've had a question, there has been someone to answer it. The learning never stops, and the community is composed of such wonderful people, I can't think of a better place to be.

Wow, that almost got sappy. :-)

I'm here to learn and be inspired both of which happens daily. This site just breeds creativity. I can't tell you how many times I'll stumble upon hidden gems buried among thousands of portfolios. To me everyone here are teachers. Just seeing how others saw things makes you a better photographer, IMO.

I came here to challenge myself as a photographer.. I have entered on other contest sites but they didn't have the restrictions that these challenges have. I have watched my photography develop and grow due to that and also with the change from my point and shoot to a slr. It's a learning process.

I love the forums but some people are way too wrapped up in them and should probably use that time to go out and shoot instead of posting 5 thousand threads!

<~~~practicing what she is preaching ..going to shoot now. ; )

edited to change "posing" to "posTing".. what can I say.. I am just a poser at heart ; )
