I am holding in my hot little hands a gently used Canon EOS 30D, six months old. Its owner is a guy I know fairly well, and I have very good confidence that he take excellent care of his gear. He's selling the 30D to finance his 5D (sound familiar?). He is offering me the body, battery grip, two batteries, and a 2 gig card for $1250. He also has a 50mm 1.8 that he's willing to toss in for a little more coin.

B&H is currently listing $1190 for the price, body only, new. I know I'll need to talk him down a little or else I'd just buy it new. I'm confident in the condition of the body and he's letting me borrow it until Monday so I can shoot with it over the weekend.

Opinions? Fair price for the body/grip/2g card package?? Toss in the 50 1.8?? All feedback welcomed.

seems fair to me. I wnet from the 10d to the 30d as well and it is a very nice jump. If you know it is in good condition and doesn't have a crazy number of clicks on it then I say go for it.

He's asking 150 less than I paid at Wolf for body+1 extra battery. You get grip and card also. Not too shabby.

Thanks guys, good feedback. I'm always happy to pay a slightly higher price to a trusted friend who I know has taken good care of the equip.

BTW, I've always wondered, how can you find the number of shutter clicks??

Sounds like a very fair deal John! I don't know whether youcan get at the number of actuations on the 30D. I know that someone wrote a program to do so on some older Canon 1-series cams, but I don't believe it works on newer cams or non-1-series.

If he has never reset the numbering, the file name of the newest shot should tell you.

This is correct, I have never done a reset on mine since I got it in April, and I'm close to 5k clicks now. I like the fact that it keeps counting for me, I dont have to worry about conflicting file numbering since I dont rename. And as far as the price it seems fair considering you get the grip batteries and CF cards.

The pic I just shot is IMG_1025.JPG, and in camera it shows 100-1025. Would the "100" change to 101 if he had reset the numbering??

It might change to 201 - mine is on 12k and says 225.

$1100 for the body new? Why's the price comeing down so fast?

1. Competition with the XTi, which has many superior functions, though a plastic body.
2. Dumping stock in anticipation of the next bump in the line (40D?).

Sold!

Closed the deal this AM. Got him to toss in the 50mm 1.8 to make the package very sweet for $1,250. Woo-hoo!

WTG John! :-)

The difference in responsiveness is gonna blow you away... you've alread played with it so you know it responds a lot faster, but wait until you really shoot with it for a while, and then try shooting with the 10D again.

I'm so there!

First two official shots with the new cam. The first is when my daughter was feeling it out and snapped a pic of me as I was trying to make lame rationalizations to my wife as to why I needed to do this upgrade now. It was made more complicated that it's only 11 days until her birthday. I felt like Homer Simpson buying a bowling ball for Marge with the name "Homer" engraved on it. Smartypants snapped this of me:

This morning, I went out as the sun rose and snapped a few of the beginning fall colors on our street.

FWIW, it feels like a very small upgrade. Almost everything about the camera is sooo similar to the 10D, it feels very right. As Kirbic said, the responsiveness is unbelievable. It's only a modest upgrade in number of pixels. The best thing is that all my glass still works the way it always did, but now I can use S-mount lenses if I need to.

Even got the nice little 50 1.8. NICE!

Schweet!
