Monster sized mushroom (6-8 inches across) growing in the horse pasture. There were several of them that drew my interest. Took a peek underneath and couldn't help but notice these strong lines.
Figured this was cool and thought it would work for the 'Leading Lines' challenge.
... then, two days later I went to clean up the light tent (throw out the mushroom), and this was sitting there. It was a bit smelly but I couldn't resist working with it, it looked very interesting. ;^)
So there you have it. A freshly picked mushroom and it's demise. ;^) |

So hopefully the real end of the tale is you ate that thing and then go really, really creative on your Purple entry ;) |

Hmm I like the first one better. Great detail and nice to look at.
The second one is too busy for me and the shroom looks so flat; no DoF.
but hey, 15th place! :D
edit: may I ask why you used F32, 25 sec?

Certainly for maximum DOF.

ghehe, maximum DoF. So there was less DoF in the other one.
ok! |

I hear ya on the flat part...was a little concerned about that (just a tad). ;^) But I really liked the texture and contrast.
As for F32, 25 sec...I usually shoot in Aperture priority, this time no exception. I wanted to keep as much in focus as possible so I went as deep as my lens would let me. The 25 second exposure was camera set based on available light and aperture. Used a light tent with two 60 watt bulbs set back a little (used white reflectors in front) and a handheld 100 watt (in worklamp cone) high overhead and off to the side. I wanted some light shadows to highlight the areas between the fins but wanted to avoid any harsh shadows around the stem area. |

Just noticed I had Manual mode listed in the details of the second shot (challenge entry) - it was Aperture priority and Manual focus. Oops. Thanks biteme for making me look. ;^) |

FWIW, I greatly prefer the "pre-decay" image to the submitted image; I think it's really nice. The submitted image strikes me as too busy, comparatively.

Thanks Robert. I really had a hard time choosing for a while. I liked them both but went with the busier image in the end because I thought it would be more "interesting", or hold interest just a second longer, with the majority of voters and score higher. |

Looks like you did a better job of it than I did Barry. I never thought about shooting the dried up mushroom though. I tossed mine when I was done. I'm just curious about leaving the shutter open for that long. Does it make that much of a diffence on something that is well lit and not moving? How does it effect the DOF? |

Kelli - You did a nice job of capturing the natural look with this shot.
The shutter speed was long because of the way I had the lighting setup and my choice of aperture. No, it probably didn't have to be done that way, and I may have had an acceptable result at wider apertures with faster shutter speeds. When I hand-hold the top light I end up with various results and in taking several shots at various f-stops the one that looked the best to me happened to be the F32 one. ;^)
Here's a decent thread which covers DOF in more depth => Focus vs Depth of Field

Barry, nice shots, both of them. Overall I like the fresh mushroom a little better because of the symmetry of the lines. |

My apologies if you've already seen this. Meant to bump this one time for the late nighters and never did. Thanks. :D |
