bump. I hate for this thread to die, when I'm so excited!

I just returned from Yellowstone, and I never tire of going there.

YAY for Sept. 28-Oct. 2, though I'll probably only be able to come Sept. 29 - Oct. 2.

I'm flexible with what we want to do, but it would be fun to see wildlife on this trip. Camping is great, as are cabins, if we shared to split the cost.

The Tetons have some SUPER nice, short hikes around some lakes that put the mountains right behind at sunrise. WOW. Yellowstone is magnificent, too, though for geyser shooting, the only really good shots I've seen have been with the sun or moon right behind the spout for backlight.

If we wanted to see some wildlife, moose and bears abound in both parks, but we'll have to get up early and take the right trails. Both parks have trails that, statistically speaking, have good wildlife sightings.

Are we still planning?

How about the week/end of Sept. 28 (Thurs.) through October 2 (Monday). We could start in the Tetons (I'm thinking Signal Mountain Campground or Lodge)for a couple days and then move up to Yellowstone for the last 2-3 days. Several of the Yellowstone campgrounds are still open. Camping is easier to find spots at this time of year, but there are some cabin/room openings available. It's also cold for camping, but that just makes the evening fires more enjoyable.

I know these dates may be a problem for Heidi, but earlier than Sept 23rd is a problem for me and we have several who can't make it that weekend.

Give me a yay or nay for Sept.28 - Oct.2.

So where do we meet? If starting in the Tetons, I recommend Signal Mountain campground. It's right by Jackson lake. Or the Jenny Lake campground is nice because of close proximity to lots of hiking trails. Of course, Colter Bay is also a great place with lots of hiking trails close by.

Then we could move up into Yellowstone!

My vote is the Signal Mountain Campground, too. I've worked at Signal Mountain (in the 70's) and loved the area. Very central in the Tetons. Also, that campground is open.

I agree with moving up to Yellowstone, later.

We are still going. With the weather turning colder, my hubby and I are looking into inside lodging. The Motel 6 in Jackson has some availability and is only $60 night. That's just 20-30 minutes from the middle of the Teton park. Yellowstone may be a bit trickier for finding lodging.

I'm getting very excited to go.

I'm not going to make this one Becky. I was hoping to finally get to see Yellowstone (was last there when I was 4 or 5). Maybe next time. Thanks for all you're doing.

Sorry to hear that. This trip is pretty low key, though.

I have a work-related seminar on the 2nd that I can't avoid, but I am stoked for the weekend. (Did a preview trip over Labor Day, and I am PRIMED!)

To all who are interested I was out in Yellowstone 9/1/2006 to/9/12/2006,and I am going to give a quick overview with a few tips on where to find wildlife for those going anytime soon.

We stayed on the West enterence of Yellowstone, in a town called west Yellowstone. There are a bunch of hotels and little shops there and is right outside the park. When entering the park you pay the park fee of $25.00 per car. (includes everyone in it) This $25.00 is good for both the Tetons and yellowstone for 7 days.

Anyways, Driving in the west entrence toward the grand loop you are following the Madison river on you left. About 1 mile from the gate is an active eagles nest, so for those looking for eagle photos (make sure you have 200+ mm lens) this area was the most productive for eagles. Also right on the West entrence road, there we alot of bison and elk grazing in the many valleys that lined the side roads, but also in the middle of the road so be careful.

Yellowstone is comprised of 2 loops. The upper loop takes you through the mountainous area and includes places like Gibbons falls, Tower falls, Udine falls, many spots for wildlife and smaller geyser basins. Also this will be where, if any place you will see bear. The hiking trail to the base of Tower Falls is closed due to a rock slide that hasnt been cleaned up so I do not reccommend it because the only overlook was really really crowded! Also if returning to either the east or west side of the park you will pass right by Haden valley. This is a beautiful landscape worthy of time. (people who are good in pano's will like it here)

The Lower Loop has Old faithful, the connector to tetons, Moose falls, lewis falls, yellowstone lake, The fishing bridge (another area for osprey and eagle) and many large geyser basins and again wildlife photo ops. Artist point is one of the highlights of the lower loop it is in the Grand canyon of yellowstone and is absolutely breaktaking. Be prepared for crowds however as it is a tourist area. If you want a really nice shot and are in decent shape I suggest uncle toms trail, comprised of 320 steps basically straight down this trail will bring you super close onto this fall.

I will briefly comment on the Tetons, The teons were very hazy the day I went, there is a Major wildfire close by and The haze and smoke caused by it is prdominate through the park. The park over all is very breathe taking with the highlights being (on clear sunny days with minimal wind) Oxbow bend Scenic turnout, Snake River turnout, Barn on Mormon Row, and Jenny Lake. I also suggest for those who go to pay the $7.50 to cross Jenny lake and do the 1/2 mile hike to hidden falls and insperation point. On a clear day in fall I would believe the view from insparation point would be awesome. Here is a very heavily post processed shot

I will add more pictures on this thread of my adventure of Yellowstone, I have been trying to choose for the September Free study, and as soon as I do I will post other photos.

Hope this helps those interested and Sory for the length

*-Rich

This late in the season, crowds shouldn't be a big deal unless there is a grzzly on the side of the road. Have fun can't wait to see your gallery when you all get back. Van

Hey Becky, I'm out to. Unfortunately, our building move is the weekend of the 6th and I won't be able to miss any work for those two weeks. I'm really bummed, I was looking forward to trying out my new gear too.

:D

Perhaps next tip or when you guys get back we can plan another local trip with everyone.

I'm still coming, and I'm trying to get work off on Monday and Tuesday so I can stay longer, even if everyone else leaves. I'll probably bring my son, Owen, with me. He's 7. The weather is looking a bit warmer for next week, so we're still planning on camping. As we get closer to the date, ought we to set some specific times/places to meet?
09/25/2006 03:35:04 PM · #41
I'm planning on going up Thursday and coming back Tuesday. My hubby will be with me.

Dave and Dave, I'll PM you (or call) today to set up meeting places and itinerary. It looks like a small by skilled (at least you all are) group. It will be great.

Just spoke with f-32. He's been pulled into some prior commitment that will keep him in Salt Lake, so the numbers dwindle.

I have 6 photoshoots between now and the weekend and three big ones next week. I think going to Yellowstone would be a terrific "break" right about now.

It doesn't matter how many are going. I'm going! I'm tired and stress and cranky and I deserve a break. So it's nature, photography and a warm bed with a loving husband at night. Sounds like heaven to me!

Dang sounds like a lot of fun, wish I could get up there. Maybe I'll be in Utah for Christmas.

For the next month or two I've put myself into a very busy mode. Getting my real estate license and I'm the Chief Photographer for a new color real estate newspaper that just started here in San Antonio. So far I go out a half dozen times a week for the paper and then spend the three day weekend for 12 hours each day getting the Real Estate license completed. Dang ... dang ... Yellowstone and Tetons sound so much more fun. Lokk forward to seeing some great autumn photos.

I'm off to the Tetons. If anyone decides to go, ask for Tesch at the Motel 6 in Jackson, Wy. Otherwise, I'll post some pictures when I get back.
