I really hate flash (not just because I suck at using it but that is part of the deal) so I have been playing around a bit - cause I should know how to use them better instead of relying on my faster glass :-).
Seems to me that second curtain is what you always want because the blur is prior to the freeze action. Why is the default 1st curtain (on the 20D anyway)? Why would 1st be used instead of 2nd? I presume if there is no motion then they should be the same right?

Possibly because 1st curtain flash is all there used to be available, and for most cameras is still all there is available? S opeople are used to that? Shooting with 2nd curtain takes some getting used to, assuming there is rapid motion in the frame during the exposure. People that used it inadvertently might be surprised by the results and think something was screwy?
I agree, with a stationary subject it doesn't make a difference. There may be technical reasons 1st curtain is preferable as a default mode. Kirbic will know :-)

This isn't much of a reason to default to first curtain sync, but its the only thing I can think of.
If you have a shutter speed that is over 1/4 or so, there will be a noticeable delay between the pre-flash and the flash with second curtain sync. Your subject may see the pre-flash, and then move, so the picture will show the person walking away :-)
This probably would affect the new DSLR owner who wants to take a group shot, sets the camera to Av and sets the aperature to f/8 so he gets a wide DOF, and forgets to check that the shutter speed is now 3 seconds :-)

Raises hand - Yeah, I'v done that :-)
Thanks guys - I could not think of a reason and the "stuck in the past" is probably the right answer. I shoot in AV 95% of the time, so I will stick with the 2nd curtain and stop thinking about this stuff. |

Is first-curtain the flash firing when the shutter first opens, and second-curtain where it fires just before the shutter closes, or something else entirely? |
