If you were going to add another lens/or two to this lineup, what would you choose? I have around $850ish that I can spend. I like to take all kinds of photos. (I added the Tam. 28-75 a few months ago because I wanted something in that range that was faster than my 17-85.) Right now I'm considering the Canon 100mm macro, Canon 35mm 2.0 and/or the 50 1.4. What are your thoughts please? I'm not sold on any particular one right now, just thinking and needing to bounce some ideas off of some other people.

Thanks ahead of time! :)

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO IF
Canon EF 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di

Looking at your list, I'm wondering, do you really need another lens?
09/26/2006 08:45:11 PM · #3
sell the 17-85 and get the 100-400 L!!!

edit to add then you could sell the 70-300 too.

Well you got an 85mm so I would scratch the 50mm.

Is the Sigma 170-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG lens any good? B&H has a used one (rated 10 as condition). That would get me more reach for animals, birds, etc. They're selling it for $689. The 100-400L sounds good but it would depend on how much I could get for my 17-85 as whether I could afford it or not. I can't decide if I want more reach or some faster primes, etc. Just considering different options.

Lol! Do any of us usually "need" another lens? I wasn't expecting to get the extra money so.....

Rex, if I went with fast primes, would the 35mm be better to get than the 50mm since I have the 85mm and the 60 macro?

Need has absolutely nothing to do with it.

More toys....
More toys....

I'd go with the 100-400 as it also has IS and it's a slightly faster lens than the Sigma.

Well you have from 10-300 (shifted by the 1.6), so not sure what you want - You could go for a penang fish (8mm??) or a lensbaby for the shift deal. You will not go longer with only $850. You could "upgrade" to something like a 70-200f4L. What about a flash? Remote trigger?

How about sending me a cheque - my name is "CASH" :-)).

Not for $850 - unless you get a great deal.

Flash is something else to consider. Where have you found the best place/s to sell your lenses? I had considered doing that with the 17-85 when I got the Tamron but with the prices quoted from the stores around here, it wasn't worth doing.

Are the images from the 100-400L THAT much better than the 70-300? That one's a pretty nice lens too.

There is a buy and sell forum here (you might have to be a paid up member, not sure); There is Fred Miranda; From the prices I see on the rare times I look, you might get the best prices selling on flee-bay :-) For a hwilr I was seriously considering selling stuff I didn't own and when it sells have B&H ship to them, since the prices were often higher then a new import price :-)

You also could consider the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM..

Wish I had your dilema :)

Buy a XTi and not have to change lenses that you already have :P
09/26/2006 11:09:49 PM · #18
Of your list,

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM

Both are excellent lenses. That would take all your money.

edit: damn im an idiot, thats the list of shit you already own.

edit again: based on what you have, and with no idea of what you shoot, my instinct would be take the money, sell the tamron, and upgrade your 24-70 range to L glass.

Just start selling and consolidating to L-glass. Why do you need so many lenses?
09/26/2006 11:26:57 PM · #20
are you a lens collector?
It's easy to get in to the habit of thinking a new lens will give you a new perspective and improve your photography when really you got to be thinking what type of pictures do i take and consider if you actually need a lens arsenal.
L lenses are the business.

i think you should use that money to buy ME a couple of lenses. ;)

Sell all the EF-S lenses and the slow 70-300, get a 5D.

Sigma4less has a new one for $619.95 + shipping. I've ordered from them 3 times and find their customer service to be excellent and their prices are generally cheaper to begin with.

P.S. You could sell the 70-300, since you have the 70-200.

Thanks, you've all given me some good advice and things to think about. Now I just have to decide what I want to do. :)

What's so great about the 5D?? I can see what's great about the 1D Mark II, I'd buy it in a heart beat. But, except for more MPs, I really don't see that the 5D is any better than my 30D.
