I need to replace my old cd drive/burner, and I am wanting to get a dvd drive, I tried the sony dru-810a, 8.5, dvd +/- r dl, with the nero program and it would play dvd,s fine, but would not burn on the new tdk/dvd-r/1-16x/4.7gb/disk. I did get it to burn on a old cd-rw/12x/700mb, but it would not show props imfo on my second computer.
Ive heard that the nero is a no no, What else would you recommend? also is there any place else to buy other than fry,s in the Phoenix, area.
Thank You
Woody

I like using Power-to-go by cyberlink for music/data etc, and for movies I use Ulead moviestudio if that help ;-)

The Creator and Toast products from Roxio have been quality/standard items for years.

you can also try DVDSanta for movie DVD, PhotoDVD, convert your existing AVI's, MPGs from your old movies to DVD movies.

I use Nero to burn to DVDs without a problem. What is Nero telling you when it tries?

I'm having issues with my DVD burner in my laptop right now, too. It will burn a DVD, but then it won't read it after it's done.

My Sony (internal) DRU-510A died a couple of weeks ago and I replaced it with a LG GSA-E10L USB 2.0 drive. It does 16XDVD+/-R and can do LightScribe (burning pics into the top of a dvd). So far I like it - I've only tried Lightscribe, Memorex and Sony media on it but it burns them all well (my Sony didn't like Memorex).

Link

I got it onsale at Best Buy for $99. It may go on sale again.

What encoding settings you have when you are burning DVD?

Same probs, it will burn on the dvd-r disk but wont read what it just burned, and it says that my other computer should read the disk with the cd drive but it does not, or it wont show all the props imfo. I am using one puter for photos only (NO NET). Then I transfer to disk and to my 2nd computer for the net. this drive is only for storage to disk and tranfering to my 2nd puter, should I have stayed with a cd burner? instead of the DVD.

So you are burning a dvd and are unable to read it in the cd drive of another computer? Stupid question, have you ever been able to read a dvd in the cd drive of the other computer or is it just a cd drive?

The Sony dru-810a supported writable media, dvd+r dl, dvd+r, dvd+rw, dvd-r dl, dvd-r, dvd-rw, cd-r, cd-rw. and the nero program says that a dvd-r can be burned with photo and/or music then veiwed on most cd drives,
No I am not trying to burn a movie to dvd and play it on cd drive.

I didn't ask about a movie. Are you burning data to a dvd and then trying to play it in the cd drive of your second pc (which is what you said). Have you ever used the cd drive in your second pc to access dvd discs? Basically I'm asking - is it a cd drive or is it a cd/dvd combo drive capable of reading dvd's as well as cd's. In your second computer. Not the Sony.

Sorry, just getting frustrated, It is a cd drive only on the 2nd. My confusion is with the dvd drive and the nero program that says that my cd drive should read the dvd-r disk but it does not and the dvd drive wont even read its own disk after burning it.

Ok. The cd drive in the second computer will never read the dvd's you create on the first. What problem you are having on the first is a separate issue. Nero is (waS?) a program developed in Germany and as I recall the documentation suffered a bit from some translation problems. If what you quote is accurate, they meant dvd -r's will play in most dvd players, not cd.

You can buy two network cards and a cross-over cable to network your two pc's for under 50 bucks. If you are just interested in moving files between the two, it would be the easiest fix.

The cards and crossover sound good, would make things alot faster. But what are the chanses of contamination from the net computer getting back to my offline computer? It does not have anything to protect it. and I try to keep it for photoshop and photo files only, +DVD movies it I can get it to work. plus I still need to save my photos to disk for safty, but it does no good if the driver wont read its own disk.

When you have the two computers connected, just unplug the one from the internet and it's unlikely you'll run into a problem, especially if you're copying picture files from the "home" machine to the internet machine and not in the other direction.

Thanks Guys, all is working well. routerguy666 your imfo on the dvd to cd is correct, and to save money on the network cards I gave in and connected to the ethernet on my DSL, and installed virus scan. To anyone that was having the same probs with the DVD driver not wanting to read its own disk, My prob was that I was trying to burn from the NERO startsmart window/copy and backup/burn image to disk. and that was not working. the way that works is, NERO startsmart window/data/make data dvd, Then drag and drop from your files/burn. thanks again guys.
