Shot this sunset a little over a month ago. Sat down tonight to play around with some old shots and chose this one:

Nice. Did you use a cokin filter to get that color?

No filter. Straight from camera and I didn't boost sat or mess with the hue at all. That's straight from the RAW image with a little boost to exposure and slight sharpen.

My goodness, that is one beautiful red sky! Do you guys get skies like that often?

These images with both shot at a distance of about 2 miles from the capitol dome with a 400mm lens (600mm effective), so the amount of sky being seen is just a few degrees around the blinding orb of the sun. When shooting directly at the unfiltered sun (other than the atmospheric haze), the sky hues can be deceptive. If I had shot this with a much wider lens, I'm sure we'd see the typical gradient from blues higher up (and the the sizes) to yellows, to oranges, etc., as you get closer to the disk of the sun. I didn't shoot anything wider until after the sun was already completely down and the brightness of the sky had faded considerably.
