I have never held a macro lens. What are they like? I have a 28mm 1.8 prime and a 50 mm 1.8 prime that I use quite a bit for street photos at night and I'm looking for a longer prime, I'm also looking for something that does good macros. Is this lens both? Is it as sharp as a prime? Is there something about it that is not as good as a normal 100mm lens for "normal" 100mm shots? Is it a good macro lens? Is this my solution to both problems?

It is an amazingly sharp Prime. Great for Portraits etc...

so to get it to do a macro, do you have to do anything different or change a setting or something, or does it just focus insanely close?

Just focus it on down. It's an exceptionally sharp lens throughout its range. No special switches or anything for macro.

cool. looks like I will be ordering one. I just wish it could get here before the abstract macro challenge is over.

Shoot with your 50mm and crop to macro; at 640 pixels the difference isn't really noticeable anyway. Get as close as you can, then crop. Use f/1.8 if you want that razor-thin DOF feel of a "true" macro.

In the mean time, you can also use extension tubes with your 50mm until you decide to purchase the 100mm/2.8 lens. If you go for the 100mm, I suggest you check out buydig.com. I did a lot of web searching, and they had the best price by far ($459 USD). I ordered mine just a few days ago and I can't wait to get my hands on it. There's always eBay (I just saw the 70-200 2.8L on eBay with a starting bid of $899), but that could be a risky proposition (depending on the return policy).

You just missed a great opportunity to pick up the Canon 100mm macro at a great price. Spare yourself the heartache and don't scroll to the bottom of the thread to see who actually bought it.

I just received my Canon 100mm/2.8 macro last night. Unfortunately, it was delivered after dark which made experimenting with it outdooors impossible. I did try it out indoors with coins, lens caps, and items with small text. Most everyone's comments about this lens are true...very sharp, very crisp, amazing detail. This is by far the sharpest lens that I own, hands down.

I took this as a test for the Canon 100mm/2.8 macro lens. The crispness and detail of this lens blew me away. Photo has not been re-touched, with the exception of re-sizing.
