I have an XT with grip.
Doing a lot of commercial photography work lately for money.
Should I upgrade to XTi or 30D?
And why? |

What kind of commercial photography? A full framed 5D might be better depending on what you are shooting. |

I'd vote for holding off on an upgrade. The 400D and 30D are both fine choices but I keep thinking Canon will announce something else at Photokina. It's less than a week away so it couldn't hurt to wait. If indeed a new one is announced you may be able to realize a savings on the 30D. |

The 30d is a pretty solid camera man...I'm assuming the xti is more like the rebel? Mostly plastic'y, cheap-feeling, too small to even feel like you're holding a camera, etc.

if you can afford, go for a used 5D (otherwise, I'D prefer the XTI, because of the ultrasonic cleaning system and u already have the grip to get the right feeling). But, as technoshroom already said, wait til the photokina is over.

Definately wait to see whats on the horizon.
If you are determined to go for the two options mentioned tho, I would probably opt for the 30D, but I would have to look at the spec closely first.
When I bought my 350D, I did consider the 20D, but the specs were so close that I couldn't justify paying the extra cash when the 350D had practically the same capabilities. In fact the only real difference was the handling and build quality.
I have a battery grip on my 350D now, and it handles as well as any camera I have every used.
If the specs are as close again between the 30D and the 400D I would have to really think closely (I understand the 400 has anti dust technology that the 30D doesn't, this might swing things a little for me too). |

I'd agree with holding on to see if something new pops up at the photo show.
If not, I'd probably go with the 30D upgrade, unless you find that your life is plagued constantly by dust. |

Would be a tough choice for sure. Guess look at the main difference and decide which suits you and your shooting style better.
30D
sturdier shutter
faster burst shooting
spot metering
more solid construction/heavier
xti
higher resolution
Anti dust
smaller lighter |

I don't understand the raving over anti-dust. I shot with my rebel for a year and a half, constantly changing lenses outdoors and never once got any sensor dust. had my 30D for a month or so, shot with it outside for a week on vacation a bit ago changing lenses on sand dunes - again, not a spot of dust. While it might be a useful feature, it certainly wouldn't make or break a buy decision for me.
Also, while I make no claim at being a prophet, I will be suprised if Canon annouces anything new. They annouced the 400 specifically to beat annoucements by everyone else so that is probably it for them.
If you are using the camera for work and making money with it, buy the best tool you can. |

I shoot in RAW so the additional resolution of 2 mp doesn't really matter. I think im giong to go for the stronger body/shutter in the 30D and call it a day.
Photokina isn't going to bring any new announcements I don't think, Canon just introduced a new camera and new lens pretty quickly, and thats on top of the release of the 30D. If something crazy comes out and its the same price as the 30D or cheaper I'll just return the 30D - it will only be a week old. |

if they do come out with something new, the price on the 30d will probably drop, so the price of your resell would go down with it... why not wait the week, and if they do come out with something then get the 30d for cheaper.... |

Reckon your mad, for the sake of a week you can know for sure whats over the horizon.
I reckon they have stuff ready for release in the next couple of weeks. I think a D40 is likely, prob the same spec as the D30 but with the anti dust perhaps?
The recent releases of canon's gear is a reaction to Nikons new gear, Canon are now gonna release a camera to blow the brilliant new Nikon away!
This is of course just my suspicion, but I wouldn't be surprised! |

Ok, what date specifically do I have to wait for? So when it passes and nothing is out I can go ahead and order. I have the money in hand right now - this is going to be difficult. |

Well, Photokina runs from September 26th to October 1st. Any announcement would be made somewhere around the 26th/27th. |

LOL Kevin, I know how hard it is when you have the money and are itching to get some new gear, I am like a kid when I have some cash to spend on a new bit of kit!
I guess the answere your after is which camera should you go for out of the 30D and the 400D.
I have been looking at the specs since your post yesterday, and I think I would go for the 400 and a battery grip. The 400D has better specs, and this is what would matter to me, build quality is important, but I don't ever shoot without using my neck strap and I also have camera insurance should I ever deop any of my gear.
I often wonder if a 20D (or now the 30D) would honestly be okay after dropping it, because the way people go on about the build quality you'd thing people are bouncing them off walls without any ill effects

Isn't it more to do with how "solid" it feels though? For example when people shove kit around or take part in more extreme shoots, they want something that feels like it will hold together, rather than a flimsy feeling plastic.
I doubt either camera is designed to be thrown at the wall. |
