Originally posted by Ivo: Having stepped away from DPC for a while, and now coming back, it became somewhat more evident on the stiffling limitations self imposed on voters with their preconcieved notion they are authorities on compositional techniques, creativity, etc. This "ignorance" and "narrow minded attitude" is contrary to the creative diversity within the challenges and leads many submittors to just "meet" clinical challenge requirements with little thought to adding soul to their submission. As I go forward with my photography I can see a clear seperation between the photos I needed to do versus the photos I am proud of. If submittors would pay less attention to what the masses want and more attention to what they wish to convey, the images within challenges would likely provoke more thoughtful voting and inspire the rest of us to break away from the blah. For me, this revelation has brought out my best work so far. Do we not pursue this hobby with the notion of sharing what we see or do we feelobligated to deliver what we think others want us to see? Just a thought. |

Well said. I've also just began entering challenges here again after a bit of a hiatus. After numerous unsatisfying results on photos I thought were well crafted, I realized that you really can't take voting personally (or seriously, for the most part) and you're exactly right—you most likely won't create a phenominal image when created for the masses. This site is a perfect study of the saying "you can't please all the people all the time" not only because of the narrow-minded and boundry-plagued critcism, but also because of the wide varity of subjective photographic preferences, techniques, genres and styles. Of course, when the people judging are vying for the same digital blue ribbon, scores are bound to lean toward the dredded 1's in effort to keep 6's in winning posisiton. So let's just have fun and learn instead—Make the images to communicate the stories you see. There is no other "you" in this world and no one will ever capture the same story with your perspective. Understanding that is worth more than a 10 to me. Thanks for you words of wisdom!

seems to me for this Leading Lines challenge there are a lot of voters and/or entrants who can't see leading lines unless it's a slap-you-in-the-face, perfectly-straight, hard-edged line (as in a road, railroad track or building). what too many aren't getting is that leading lines can be found almost everywhere you point your eyes (or camera). i just wish everyone was open-minded enough to see it.

i'll take my mediocre score (of a photo i'm very happy with) and get off my soap box now, thanks. LOL |

Very well said and right on, a lot of voters only see an image in thier way, and take no interest in the photographers perspective, and if it dose'nt suit them tough, oopps there goes another 3' 2' 1'. |

This will likely be my 2nd worst score ever. I have an idea why but comments would be helpful. The one, yes one, comment I have is a positive one. Sigh.
