Today I was taking some shots in automatic mode that were coming out super bright. I'd never done any manual adjustments except for length of exposure (and focal length gets changed too, but I never knew what I was really doing with that) but I decided I would try the bracketing exposure thing. So I switched to a different letter on the settings dial (I don't even know what S stands for) and after taking a couple of test shots, I had what I wanted! I had never specifically paid attention to stuff on the forums talking about bracketing, but just by being here I was able to pick up enough info to really help. So I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who participates in this site and helps make it a place where so much learning happens. |

S is most likely "shutter priority." That means the camera allows you to set the shutter speed, and then it controls everything else. If you set a very fast shutter, it'll open up the aperture (increase the f number). If you select a slow shutter speed, it'll stop down the aperture.
Aperture priority is allowing you to set the aperture (f number) and then the camera sets everything else to optimize the shot. |

Did you ever read your camera's manual? There might be some useful hints in there. ;-) |

I tried to read the manual. But it didn't like me very much. ;-D |

I guess the thing that I'm getting at is that I was fine taking shots not using S until just today, and DPC gave me what I would have gotten from a manual. So just taking the opportunity to say thanks to DPC. :-) |

Just curious....doesn't shutter and aperture priority act almost like an auto setting? Auto controls everything, but it doesn't know if your shooting motion or landscape. By changing the shutter or aperture, you're still letting the camera pick the other. Yes, I realize there are times those are beneficial such as shooting a plane, certain action sports, etc.
