Hey fellow DPCers. I took a couple of shots of an interesting(to me anyway) Moth I think it is. And when I got home I wanted to identify it. I havent had any luck searching the web. Is there anyone that can help me identify what this thing is? And I also didnt realize these things were that hairy.

These look very similar to the Bogong Moth we have in Aussie. Big black/grey/brownish and hairy little mo-fos.

Best I can do. I have a phobia and those thumbnails are about as much as I can handle :D

Thanks I looked through the family of those. But there are so many its unreal. And not all have photos. But I havent been able to put a direct hit on an identity to it. Thanks for the help, and sorry about the scare.

Look in the family of Sphinx moths. It sorta reminds me, but I can't get a good enough look.

EDIT: spelling...that's Sphinx, the mythical creature...not Leonard....

Yeah, it looks like some variation of a sphinx moth, possibly rustica, as seen here:

//www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species?l=3365

This is a very good site to scroll through thumbs of moths and butterflies. They break 'em down by taxonomic groups.

R.

"Identification: Abdomen has 3 pairs of yellow spots. Forewing is yellowish brown to deep chocolate brown with a dusting of white scales and zigzagged black and white lines. "

Thanks Bear and DrAchoo,

I think you may be on to something there, I got up early this morning to try and look through the pages with that family of moths.

Look like the moths we have here - commonly called Wood Moths, although I am not sure that is the proper namne for them.

This one I took a week or so ago

I think the scientific name for this guy is "Mothwho matchesgroundus" but I could be wrong.
