In all my years with film SLRs, I really have never used a lens hood. My previous lenses didn't come with hoods, so I never bothered.
However, I just bought a new DSLR kit (plus an add'l lens) on Friday and both lenses have hoods.
How critical is it to use the hood? I realize that the angle of the sun into the lens is one time when hoods are good. Are there certain other conditions where I would require a hood? If so, when?
Sometimes I may want lens flare, so in those cases, I shouldn't use one, yes?

I like my hoodies because they...
1. ...help protect my lense from my greasy fingers as well as scratchy objects.
2. ...make my lense look bigger, which impresses the chicks.

I never use them.
There was a hood with my Sigma 70-300mm. When totally zoomed, with the hood, it looked too stupid in the hands of a little girl ;-)
Anyway, I think they're a pain in the ass. And, I don't have to impress the chicks :P

LOL! That's it, I'm leaving my hood on!

Pretty much all summer long I find that I need them. The sun is usually at just the right angle to cause just the wrong lens flare on the otherwise perfect shot. I'd rather deal with a big ole lens hood than miss a shot.

| When you have the hood on you can leave the lens cover off if you want to take some quick shots. Sometimes kids will bump my lens when I'm on the street and the hood protects the lens somewhat. |
