Has anyone got B&W ilford prints from MPix? How were they, especially compared to traditional B&W film and paper?
Furthermore, what's the biggest size I can print from an 8MP (rebel xt)? Mpix says about 20x30, but will upsizing with Genuine Fractals or something similar produce decent prints? This would be for a gallery showing, so quality is very important. Thanks.

I have a few B&W's from Mpix, and I think they look great, but I can't compare to film prints. I was able to get a 20x30 print out of my 5 MP P&S with a bit of upsizing in Photoshop using the 10% method - frankly, I think this print looks quite good. I am not the most discerning of critiquers, but for my money, I think Mpix does a great job.

When you get up to the size of 20x30 or larger, you start taking into account viewing distance... for example, noone views a 30x40 print at distances where they could visually discern 300 DPI from 72 DPI. You say this is for a gallery showing. What is your viewer distance from the image?
It's quite possible and has been done to print a billboard from an 8 MP camera. As as matter of fact, I think a user on this site has had a photo on a billboard. Can't remember who though.

I think gallery settings tend towards a closer inspection. I know I often view gallery prints up close, even very large ones, and I certainly want these to hold up to close inspection. So I certainly want 300 dpi.
But can I interpolate the image without noticeably affecting print quality? Alamy suggests Genuine Fractals for interpolating, has anyone had any experience with it?
