I recently read that the professional advice is to remove any extra catchlights that appear due to fill flash or trigger flash, such as in this picture. It was suggested that only catchlights at about the 11 or 1 o'clock position should be retained.

My feeling is that those little catchlights add depth and interest, particularly if they're relatively close to the larger ones. It was also suggested that catchlights be removed from eyes in shadow, but I'm not so sure. Anyone have any opinions?

I prefer single catch lights in portraits or if ther are secondary catch light they should be very faint.

As far as removing catchlights from eyes in shadows, I disagree. That is unless you are trying to make the subject look dead.

The example you posted are faint and small and actually quite appealing. If they were the size of the main catch lights, they would look bad.

These are just fine, Louis; the ones you want to remove are the ones that compete with the primary catchlights, and that ain't happening here...

I guess with a superb photo like this you start getting nit-picky with stuff like double catchlights (hope that comes across right). It looks fine, don't even worry about it. REALLY nice shot there, good job!

Thanks... I guess by competing that means if they are as large and at the opposite point on the "compass".

Yes, exactly.

Maybe not "as large" or truly opposite, but in the ballpark enough to stand out, yeah...
