I guess I should rephrase that...an official "D"SLR owner, since I have two film SLRs (Olympus OM-1, Canon AV-1).
I eBay'ed my Canon Powershot S2 IS. Then today I bought a Pentax K100D kit, and supplemented it with a Tamron 75-300 lens (x1.5 when on the Pentax). It's far from high-end for sure, but my budget, coupled with the fact that Samy's Camera is having a no-sales tax promotion and a ton of freebies thrown in, dictated the deal.
Some of these freebies included very basic quality items such as a tripod, camera case, 1Gb SD card, Samy's windbreaker jacket, a refurbished Epson Photo printer, 300 free prints, etc.
So, all the photos I've entered into the challenges, as well as the photos in my personal portfolio, so far have been from the Powershot, but I hope to add Pentax shots soon. In fact, tomorrow, I'm shooting a youth club soccer game. If any photos turn up decent, I'll post one or two here in this thread.
Now, let's see...Leading Lines or Electricity? Hmm...

Keep your eye on that 50mm f/1.4 that Pentax has for only 200 bucks...
Also, there will soon be a 16-50 f/2.8 released by Pentax for Pentax. (two weeks?)
I read somewhere that it will be the same as the Tokina, but have an extra Pentax-only coating to help improve the Chromatic Aberration aspect of optics that Tokina always seems to have such a problem with.
That's equivalent to a 24-75mm f/2.8 lens in FF. The Canon 24-70 f/2.8 is more expensive than your camera and your entire lens kit, including if you get the above two lenses. :)

Here is one of my first "daylight" photos with my new equipment. I say "daylight" because I bought it yesterday evening and shot quite a few indoor photos last night, just playing around. This morning I went and shot my daughter's club soccer match and this was probably the third photo I took. I'll post more later.
Specs...
Aperture: F5.6
Shutter speed: 1/1000"
Mode: Aperture Priority
Focal Length (35mm): 456mm
ISO: 200
Did I mention that this was handheld (no monopod)? The "Shake Reduction" built into this body seems to work well, especially at this focal length.

Congrats Les. I just joined the ranks of DSLR owners today as well. After a lot of deliberation I chose the XTi. I hope that the K100 works well for you. Enjoy! |

1/1000 is far more than anything that AS can do.

Yeah, that's the truth!
When I mentioned that I was playing around indoors last night, I was in a dimly lite room and some of the handheld shutter speeds that I used were 1/10" and 1/15" with the kit lens. Without shake reduction, at these speeds, my not-so-study hands would have certainly blurred (or at least dramatically softened) the shots.

welcome to the world of DSLR ownership. I know when I got mine at the end of December, I was happier than anything. Nice photo by the way. |

Just reading back thru some old posts and I came across yours, lesgainous, so how do you rate your Pentax? Is it value for money? Does it produce sharp, colourful shots as they claim on review sites?
And finally, would you buy the same camera or would you choose a different brand?
I am interested in hearing your assessment of the K100D. Why? Cos I am tempted to get one. |
