Do the sigma 70-200mm 2.8 lenses (old and new versions) fit on the canon 2x teleconverter? i cant find the information online anywhere, and am tired of searching. All canon's web site says is that it only fits canon L glass, but canon seems to leave out any mention of other lens makers.

Does that lens have a gap between the mount and the glass? I don't have the 2x but on the 1.4x there is a part of it that slides inside my Canon 70-200mm L lens. My other non-L glass doesn't have that gap so it doesn't fit.

ETA: That gap needs to be maintained throughtout the zoom. If when you zoom the lens the glass near the mount moves outward eliminating that gap then you risk banging the glass with the extender.

Which other makers are making Canon L lenses...?

There are some third party lenses that will fit Canon's extenders.

When I was looking at TCs a while back I know it was a very short list of Canon lenses that work with the Canon TCs. I believe it is that weather seal thingy that hinders other lenses.

I ended up going with the Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 DG line. Has some great Hoya Glass (same as Tamron Pro TC) and was half the cost of the Canon.

It's not the weather seal thingy; it's the fact that there's a small, protruding lens element that actually sockets INSIDE the lens the TC is mounted to. This design is why the Canon extenders work so well optically with the lenses they are designed to mate with, but why they will not work with very many other lenses. As per what Yanko's talking about.

I hadn't even known that there existed a canon 200mm f/2.8L... but based on what i can find, it not only performs quite well with teleconverters, but also has better image quality than the sigma 70-200, and even competes with the canon 70-200mm... at half the price. This is going to be my next lens. Thanks everyone for the input

The fixed length lenses are typically sharper then zoom lenses. That's not to say the zoom lens isn't sharp. I have the Sigma 70-200 and it's quite sharp throughout the range. Since you were asking about 2X converters. I also have the Sigma EX DG 2X converter and it doesn't degrade the quality of the shots. It's also cheaper than the Canon.
