Best entertainment I've had for a while - and nicest challenge to vote on ever. Almost everyone did a great job... |

Bummer - back up to a 6.47 for me. Edit - And from my perspective there were no 2s in this challenge. I only had one 4 as my lowest vote.

As someone who both submitted and has voted on this challenge, I can't help but think that perhaps the people who have never read the Far Side before in their lives maybe shouldn't participate in this one...
Anyone else have similar thoughts? It just seems like some people who submitted, and some who are leaving comments, just don't "get" Gary Larson...
I'm at a 6.1, by the way, so I'm not complaining... just making an observation :) |

Perhaps they are voting based on the quality of the image. While we were to have fun on this one (I didnt submit in the end) it is still a photography challenge. |

I don't even mean that people are scoring things low or anything... I just get the feeling that a good number of people involved in this challenge don't really appreciate or understand Gary Larson.
I was a HUGE fan of his during the time he ran the cartoons, and I used to run out and buy every book, calendar, etc., that came out. I can remember having several Far Side cartoons taped to my wall in my college dorm room in the late 80s.
I just got the feeling from voting on the submissions that some folks had hastily looked through a few of his cartoons without really understanding his humor. I dunno. Maybe it's just me :) |

That's a good point. Most of the entries are fun Far Side type entries, but there are some that have met both the Far Side piece AND the image quality rocks! Then again, there are some that are funny and fine for Far Side but lost some attention to detail on the photographic end.
BTW - I'm a voting observer on this one, no entry for me. Didn't have the "juice" working... ;^)

In my opinion, a tribute should be done "in the style of", making an exact copy is plagiarism. Obviously, I either missed the mark, or people are voting me down for not copying an exact cartoon. I've only received one comment and it only dealt with my processing.
edit to add: This is only my OWN opinion. I didn't vote anyone down for it.

eyewave .... MY ONLY COMMENT! ... THANKS! .. too bad it's negative ;0
I think I chose a lesser known one than most ...
It's a slightly different "style" than most of his stuff --
this was a tough challenge IMO.

Larson had a bunch of different styles ... the thing that makes it a good topic for a challenge is that he usually got his point across in one frame. As with most challenges, people who are voting EXPECT to see certain things ... when those expectations are not met it can go either way ...
I only have one comment on my image but it's doing decent -- I think people are undecided on whether it is FAR_SIDE enough .. even though it is taken diretly from one of his books and modified to make it more DPC friendly ... at least i thought.

Wow, this seems like a really high scoring challenge so far. IMHO, everyone did a really great job!
So, far I'm running in the middle of the pack, but I've really enjoyed seeing all the creativity that people had...I've been laughing my ass off.

I'm kinda bummed because I forgot a key item, but that's what I get for throwing together a shot at the last minute! |

If all you did was recreate an existing far side, then I gave you a 5, 6s or 7s if your set-up was particularly elaborate. My high scores were for people who did something original (if you fooled me with a far side I don't know about, then you win). The only votes lower than 5 were a handful of 4s I gave to the ones who didn't pull off the joke, or I just didn't get it (and 1 or 2 extremely simplistic and clumsy far side reenactments).

I only saw one DNMC, a great shot though. Voted almost all 6 and above, a few had me nearly spraying my monitor, hope those ribbon. Agreed about "getting" Far Side, it was so ubiquitous in its day. I was so sure someone would do the artist painting the fly squished on his foot, my only disappointment. :-) |

I expected to see a bunch of standing, Photoshopped cows alongside a road, warning the other cows, "Car!" :) |
