I would like to see a profile flag where people could indicate their photographic "level".

Pro - someone where their primary source of income is from their photography.

SemiPro - someone who makes money from their photography, but it is not their primary source of income.

Enthusiest - someone who does not charge for their photography.

Student (Youth) - Someone not yet on their own and thus the other categories do not apply.

It would be nice to be able to see how you are doing relative to your Pro/Semi-Pro/ Enthusiest peers.

Thoughts?

That would be pretty cool...

Sounds like a great idea.

But, just because we are "Pros" doesn't mean we are good... LOL.

I also think you might want to break Enthusiast into serious Enthusiast and Casual Enthusiast

And after that is set up ... how about set of challenges for each category? (perhaps just one challenge, but with the results separated by category - possibly even voted by category)

How about Hobbiest, then Enthusiast...

Enthusiest, is that like the *ist? heh

It's tough to deal with self-labelled classifications. Especially when there are more than one...

IE bear_music... ex-pro, currently amateur prosumer level...

I think our profiles do a good job of this...

Might be nice if there was a slot for it though in the profile, maybe something like Pro/SemiPro/Enthusiast/Student/

I'd like to add "Delusional Enthusiast" to the list. :D

I'm somewhere between gearhead and wanna-be.

I agree that this would be a good addition to our profiles, a lot of sites based on different hobbies have fields where you can list your status.

Semi-pro is so... 70'ish.

Professional means a lot more than making money at photography... it's also a state of mind and a mind set as well as an attitude towards others and your customers.

A lot of people have a passion for photography but are not interested in using the term, "Professional". A lot of people make good money at photography, but also don't use the term, "Professional".

I take a lot of pictures that I don't charge for, but I consider myself a professional in every since of the word and have for a long time. Years ago (late 70's and early 80's) when I was making more money than my regular job, I only considered myself a "Semi-Pro".

What it really comes down to are:

Working Photographers - It's their job

Non-Working Photographers - They are just the other side of the line from being a "Working Photographers"

Wanna Bees - Those actively working towards one of the above.

Enthusiasists (I like that word) - They take pictures and want to improve.

Ego Bees - Those that think they are better than they really are and try to convince everyone else.

Talk-No-Walk Bees - Those that pretend, but really aren't.

And lots of other sub-catagories. :D

Why? We label you everything else :-P

Why don't we just let people define themselves through their words and profiles instead of making up excuses to add silly words under our name to look important.

I think the less groups we classify ourselves into the better.

I like the idea.
...put me down in the honyak catagory. :-P

I think people should be able to make their own descriptor up under their name, instead of worrying about being able to include every possible smattering of categories under the sun.

At the state fair they had the following divisions:

Junior Amateur: 12 and under
Young Amateur: 13 to 17
Amateur: 18 and older who don't fall into the next two categories
Advanced Amateurs: Serious amateurs, experienced photographs, those making "some" (but less than 50%) money through photographic endeavors
Professional: Those making at least 50% of their lively-hood through photographic endeavors

Obviously everyone is on their own to determine what category they fit in. At the fair, this is somewhat enforced by the fact that you pay more money to enter an image into the higher level divisions. Plus, the prints were bigger as well so it costs more just to make the prints. We wouldn't have anything like that here but I don't see that as a problem.

I still like the idea of setting up "some" of the challenges based on the division. Then you could have youth competing against youth. Professionals against professionals. And, as someone already mentioned, just because you're a professional, doesn't mean you're any good. Likewise, there are bound to be some very inspiring youth out there.

Anyway, I would support the idea.

Exactly why it's so great to have everyone in the same field competing against each other.

Put yourself in the shoes of a youngster ... and on the receiving end of some of the comments that get made here (and not made). At the very minimum, a youth division would be helpful.

I like this idea too but, yea, it could get tricky.

Maybe...

I sell things.
I want to sell things but nobody is buying them.
I just like having fun.
