I am getting ready to buy the nikon 70-200 2.8. My question is, are there any major differences between imported or usa (i.e. warrenty) I know the price is difference is about $50. Is there anything else I should be worried about if I buy imported?

Thanks
Travis

I do believe that the waranties do work different in the usa compared to overseas. I think you need to return the item back to the place of purchase insted of the Nikon or other manufacturer. I have been adivsed in the past not to purchase certain things from overseas.

Equipment breaks with grey market warranty = return item to store of purchase for warranty work. A real pain if you have to ship stuff across international borders.

Equipment breaks with USA warranty = it can be sent to any of the manufacturer̢۪s worldwide authorized service facilities for servicing.

If you don't travel much or are staying within USA, go with the imported. If like me, you live outside USA, then go with USA warranty cuz you can get the equipment serviced all over the world.

PS - I used B&H's Imported and USA way of describing grey market and non grey market products.

Nikon is picky I hear about the USA/non-USA stuff. It has to be sent to the USA (for USA warranty) or anyplace else for non-USA warranty. If b&h sells you non-USA then you can send it to them for warranty work - not sure what they do (send it to europe? lie to nikon about what country fixed it?)

I hear canon is not as harsh.

It's a matter of Nikon USA puts a % of the sales price into the their warranty bank account to repair items they imported and sold, and made a profit on. If they have to pay to repair lenses sold all over teh world it might get a tad expensive.
