I know how much I've learned from comments I've received on low-scoring shots, and I want to pass along that good karma, so I try to comment on every vote I leave of 4 and below.

But it's a regular theme to complain about not getting comments on low scores. You're not helpless, though. If you don't get comments on your own shots, go study those left on other shots. It's a great learning experience. There's a treasure trove of comments on more than 500 challenges to date.

Just skim over the ooohhs and aaahhs - they're nice to get but not helpful in terms of improvement. But read the substantive comments on both the winners and the lowest scorers.

Also read the comments on DQ'd ones, esp. after they were DQ'd. You'll learn lots of pitfalls to avoid. Many DQs are cool shots (I just added one to my favorites, in fact), but go too far in editing in the context of our challenges. So by studying those, you learn both what to avoid in a challenge and what you can do for your own pleasure, your portfolio, etc.

Here's the challenge history link. It's up there in the menu, under "Challenges:"

Whatcha still reading this for? Go read useful stuff!

That was a good link, thanks for sharing. I could not find the photos that were disqualified. Where can I view and learn from those?

At the end of the challenges, after the last place entry, are the dq'ed ones.

I frequently view the comments made, especially on ones that seem in line with ones I have taken. Even if I don't get helpful comments, to view all that has been said on the many 1000's of entries gives one a lot of information. I also like to see the list of steps you followed, which I don't see enough of. That I find even more helpful. It allows me to try similar settings on my camera to see what I come up with.

Along the same line, if you go to the Photos > Browse menu link, it will take you to pages of photos which have been most recently commented-upon; a nice random assortment of images which have stirred someone's interest enough to write about.

Also, a reminder that you will learn more from making comments than from reading them.

What I find helpful is to go to the challenge summary and hit the view by my vote option. I then have a look at the images that rated VERY differently from where I rated them. Some have comments but I also find it interesting what the general DPC thought was much better/worse then I thought. To me, this is the biggest hidden benefit of voting :-)

Edit: I wish it had my vote sequence though because it only has the position it came and after a few pages it gets harder to see.
